Highways Operative / Groundworker – Harwich / Dovercourt, Essex
About the Role
Oakstone Contracting are looking for an experienced Highways Operative / Groundworker to join our team working on a highway improvement scheme in Harwich / Dovercourt, Essex.
This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced highways operative or groundworker with a good understanding of highway construction, civil engineering and reinstatement works.
The successful candidate will work as part of a site team carrying out a range of highway and groundworks activities, including excavation, kerbing, paving and associated construction works.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out general highways and civil engineering groundworks.
- Installation of kerbs, edgings and associated concrete works.
- Excavation, preparation and backfilling of construction areas.
- Construction and reinstatement of footways and highway areas.
- Carrying out paving and associated hard landscaping works.
- Assisting with drainage and other underground infrastructure works.
- Preparing areas for asphalt and other surface finishes.
- Assisting with highway surfacing and reinstatement.
- Setting out and working to drawings, specifications and levels where required.
- Operating small plant and equipment where suitably trained and authorised.
- Working safely around existing underground services.
- Working within traffic management and highway works areas.
- Maintaining a clean, safe and organised working area.
- Working effectively as part of the Oakstone site team.
- Following RAMS, site procedures and all health and safety requirements.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working within highways, civil engineering or groundworks.
- Demonstrable experience in kerbing and edging installation.
- Experience of footway and highway construction.
- Good general groundworks experience.
- Experience of paving and/or highway reinstatement.
- Ability to work safely around underground services.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small site team.
- Reliable and punctual approach to work.
- Good attitude towards health and safety.
- Willingness to undertake a variety of tasks as required by the site programme.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
- CSCS or relevant highways/civil engineering qualification.
- NRSWA qualifications.
- Relevant plant tickets.
- Previous experience working on highway improvement/maintenance schemes.
- Experience with drainage installation.
- Experience with asphalt and highway surfacing.
- Experience working within traffic management.
Working Hours
The role will predominantly involve Monday to Friday daytime working hours, in line with the agreed project programme and site requirements.
Occasional flexibility may be required depending on the programme of works and client requirements.
Travel & Transport
The primary work location will be Harwich / Dovercourt, Essex, with the successful candidate expected to make their own way to site where possible.
Company transport arrangements may be available depending on the individual's location and the requirements of the wider site team.

Pay: £170.00-£200.00 per day
