We're looking for a talented Chef to join our friendly team at Farfield Mill. This new role will help grow and develop our popular Tea Room, preparing fresh homemade food, creating seasonal menus and working in collaboration with the Tearoom Manager to deliver a great visitor experience. About Farfield Mill
Farfield Mill is a vibrant arts, heritage and visitor attraction located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Housed within a historic Victorian woollen mill, we welcome over 34,000 visitors each year and are home to exhibitions, artists' studios, workshops and a popular tearoom. Our tearoom is an important part of the visitor experience, offering freshly prepared homemade food in a welcoming environment.
Purpose of the Role
The Tea Room Chef is responsible for preparing and serving high-quality homemade food for visitors to Farfield Mill. The role includes menu planning, food preparation, stock management, maintaining food hygiene standards and helping to create an excellent visitor experience.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation and Service
- Prepare and cook quality homemade food.
- Ensure food is presented to a consistently high standard.
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of ingredients and supplies.
- Develop seasonal menu ideas that reflect visitor demand and available resources.
- Cater for dietary requirements including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
Kitchen Management
- Maintain a clean, organised and efficient kitchen.
- Ensure compliance with all food hygiene, health and safety legislation.
- Monitor food storage, labelling and stock rotation procedures.
- Minimise food waste and manage kitchen costs effectively.
- Assist with ordering supplies and stock control.
Team Working
- Work collaboratively with the Tearoom Manager to oversee and develop the Tearoom offer, you will work in partnership across multiple areas of operation to ensure an excellent visitor experience and successful Tearoom operation.
- Work in liaison with colleagues to ensure menu development is deliverable across the team.
- Work closely with tearoom staff and volunteers on a day to day basis.
- Support the smooth daily operation of the tearoom.
- Assist with catering for group visits, events and special occasions as required.
- Contribute ideas to improve the visitor experience and tearoom offer.
General
- Act as an ambassador for Farfield Mill, providing a welcoming experience for visitors.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Experience
· Previous experience working as a chef, cook or in a similar catering role.
- Experience preparing fresh food to a high standard.
- Experience managing food hygiene and kitchen safety procedures.
Knowledge and Skills
- Good knowledge of food hygiene regulations and safe food handling.
- Ability to plan and prepare menus efficiently.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to manage stock and minimise waste.
Personal Qualities
- Friendly and approachable manner.
- Passion for good food and customer service.
- Reliable, flexible and self-motivated.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards.
Desirable Criteria
- Relevant catering qualification.
- Current Food Hygiene Certificate.
- Experience working in a café, tearoom or visitor attraction.
- Experience catering for groups and events.
- Interest in local food, sustainability and supporting local suppliers.
- Experience working with volunteers.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work weekends and bank holidays.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and undertake manual handling associated with kitchen work.
