SEMH / SEN Teaching Assistant (Secondary School)

About the Role
We are seeking a resilient, compassionate, and committed SEMH / SEN Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Salford. This is a long-term temporary position with the opportunity to become permanent for the right candidate.
The role involves supporting students aged 11–16 with a range of additional needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism (ASC), and other Special Educational Needs (SEN). Many pupils may present with trauma, anxiety, communication difficulties, or behaviours that challenge, requiring a calm, consistent, and supportive approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for students with SEMH and SEN needs
- Support pupils in and out of the classroom to access learning
- Assist teaching staff with lesson delivery and classroom activities
- Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner
- Build strong, trusting relationships to encourage engagement and progress
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and social development
- Work closely with SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals
- Help create a safe, structured, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
About You
We are looking for someone who is patient, resilient, and confident working with young people with a range of emotional, behavioural, and additional learning needs.
Experience supporting SEMH and SEN is highly desirable. We also welcome applicants with transferable experience from backgrounds such as youth work, care, residential support, sports coaching, mentoring, or behaviour support roles.
You must be comfortable supporting pupils who may display behaviours that challenge, while maintaining professionalism, consistency, and calm under pressure.
