About Us
The Black Boy Inn is a busy, family-run pub in the village of Heage, Derbyshire. We take pride in serving freshly prepared, home-cooked food in our separate dining area, specialising in traditional British pub classics made using fresh, quality ingredients wherever possible.
Our kitchen team typically consists of 3–4 people per shift, including two chefs, a kitchen assistant and, during evenings and weekends, a pot washer.
We currently serve around 700 meals each week. To maintain high standards and a great customer experience, we carefully manage our booking times so the kitchen is not overwhelmed. Our aim is for every customer to receive their meal within 30 minutes.

Who We're Looking For
We're looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, reliable chef who enjoys working as part of a close-knit team.
You'll be hardworking, organised and able to remain calm under pressure. Excellent communication skills are essential, along with the confidence to lead and support other members of the kitchen team when required.
Previous experience working as a chef in a similar busy pub or restaurant kitchen is important. We'd also love someone who can bring fresh ideas for our specials board and contribute to the continued development of our menu.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparing and cooking food to a consistently high standard
- Cooking a range of traditional pub dishes, including steaks, burgers, chicken and daily specials
- Coordinating orders with the kitchen team to ensure all meals are served together and on time
- Presenting dishes to a high standard
- Preparing fresh ingredients and ensuring fridges remain fully stocked
- Preparing homemade dishes, sauces and desserts
- Maintaining high food hygiene and health & safety standards
- Assisting with daily cleaning and scheduled deep cleans
- Supporting menu development and seasonal specials
- Assisting with stock control and ordering where required
Pay
Hourly rate is negotiable depending on experience and will always be above the National Minimum Wage.

Shift Pattern
We serve food seven days a week. Weekday shifts are generally split between lunchtime and evening service.
A typical rota may look like the following (although we are flexible and happy to discuss alternative working patterns):
- Monday: 11:00am–3:00pm and 5:00pm–finish (approx 9:00pm after clean-down)
- Tuesday: 11:00am–3:00pm and 5:00pm–finish (approx 9.00pm after clean-down)
- Wednesday: Day off
- Thursday: Day off
- Friday: 11:00am–3:00pm and 5:00pm–finish (approx 9:00pm after clean-down)
- Saturday: Rotating shifts between 9:00am–3:00pm, 12:00pm–9:00pm or 3:00pm–9:00pm
- Sunday: 10:00am–finish (approximately 7:00pm after clean-down)
