Playworker required for an After School Club in central Edinburgh, Leith area. Experience of working with children essential. Please do not apply if you do not meet this criteria.
12 hour position starting in October 2026. Hours during term-time, (12hrs), Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 3pm-6pm.
During Holiday clubs, (5 weeks per year) hours vary between 8.30am - 6pm, Mon - Friday and your contracted 12 hours will be the minimum guaranteed hours during these times but possibly a lot more. Holiday clubs run for 3 weeks in July, 1 week over Easter and 1 week over February half term as well as some in service days.
Over 7 weeks paid holidays per year when the club is closed. Holiday leave must be taken during these closed periods, 2 weeks at Christmas, one week at Easter, 3 weeks during summer school holidays and one week in October. Any other holiday leave will be at the discretion of management and unpaid .
We are looking for an enthusiastic, responsible, and above all, committed and reliable playworker to provide after school care for primary children in central Edinburgh as part of a small team with minimum ratios to maintain daily.
The role includes picking up young children from school with other members of staff and escorting them to the premises. This role is dependent on being punctual, reliable and committed as child/adult ratios must be maintained at all times. It is a permanent position and there are no other alternative positions in this club. Please consider that we are looking for a long term member of staff, staff turnover is unsettling for children and the team so if you are looking for temporary employment please do not apply.
Once at the club staff are on a rota of making and serving snack, answering the door to parents/carers, supervising/organising big games and play spaces in the large hall, organising art/ craft projects, and 1-1 support. You will also be involved in regularly planning and evaluating activities with the team and children.
Equipment and boxes of toys must be cleared away as it is a shared space, requiring a reasonable level of health and fitness for this position.
We do not have our own outdoor space so go to the local park daily, requiring a high level of supervision on play equipment and in other areas of the park.
Candidates will have previous experience of working with children and will be required to have a PVG disclosure check and register with the Scottish Social Services Council and abide by their codes of practice. Two suitable references must be provided.
It is desirable to have child protection training, fire safety, food hygiene level 2 and allergen training or if you do not hold these certificates they must be completed prior to starting. There are several additional short courses,( 30 mins-1 hr online courses) which must be taken , with the exception of pediatric 1st Aid which takes around 6 hrs and must be attended in person. We encourage staff to undertake further learning opportunities around playwork and childcare.
