Electrical Test Engineer – Approved Electrician (EICR Specialist)

Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and qualified Approved Electrician to carry out periodic inspection and testing of electrical installations across a national portfolio of retail and commercial sites
This role is primarily based in the Midlands However, travel throughout the UK may be required
We are looking for engineers who understand installations, can apply sound engineering judgement, and take real ownership of the quality and accuracy of their work
The Role
You will be responsible for delivering high-quality inspection and testing of electrical installations across a range of retail and commercial sites
This will include:
- Carrying out thorough inspection and testing in line with current regulations
- Fault finding, investigation, and diagnosis of defects
- Identifying non-compliances and deterioration within installations
- Providing clear, practical recommendations for remedial works
You will be expected to produce clear, well-structured Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs) that demonstrate consistency, accuracy, and sound engineering judgement, and stand up to both internal and client technical review
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
Carry out inspection and testing in accordance with BS 7671 (18th Edition, latest amendment)
Assess condition, compliance, and suitability of electrical installations
Apply a practical and methodical approach to fault finding and investigation
Deliver work safely within live environments
Reporting & Compliance
Produce accurate and comprehensive EICRs
Correctly apply observation codes with clear justification
Ensure all certification is completed in line with current regulations and company procedures
Use digital systems/software to complete and submit reports
Professional Standards
Maintain high personal and technical standards at all times
Communicate clearly and professionally with clients and site teams
Work independently and take ownership of workload and output
Keep up to date with industry standards and best practice
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- JIB recognised apprenticeship / NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation
- ECS Gold Card – Approved Electrician
- City & Guilds 2391-52 (or equivalent Inspection & Testing qualification)
- City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition)
- Minimum 8–10 years’ experience, with strong focus on inspection & testing
- Proven ability to produce high-quality EICRs
- Strong knowledge of BS 7671 and inspection & testing procedures
- Full UK driving licence
- Competent in using laptops/tablets and digital reporting systems
Desirable
- Experience working within large retail or commercial environments
- Experience working on national contracts
