THE COMPANY
Established in 1998, JSM Group designs and installs the power networks, digital infrastructure and specialist systems that critical industries run on, from high-power grid connections and data centres to renewable energy. Our turnkey teams deliver complex infrastructure at speed, on time, and with reduced legislative, technical and commercial risk.
THE TEAM
This is a great first step into a career in finance. You’ll join the JSM Group finance function and build a practical grounding in accounts payable while working towards a nationally recognised accounting qualification.
You’ll sit within our finance team and support the day-to-day running of the purchase ledger, gaining hands-on exposure to the full accounts payable cycle across a multi-entity group. Our suppliers and subcontractors keep our projects moving, so accurate, timely processing matters – and you’ll be part of making that happen.
SCOPE OF ROLE
This is a role of people as much as a numbers one. You don’t need previous experience – just a genuine interest in finance, attention to detail, and the confidence to pick up the phone to a supplier or a colleague to get something resolved.
What you’ll be doing
- Process vendor and subcontractor invoices accurately and in line with approval and coding requirements.
- Reconcile supplier statements to the ledger and resolve discrepancies with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
- Support the processing and review of staff expense claims and company credit card statements.
- Assist with the preparation of weekly payment runs.
- Carry out regular review and housekeeping of the vendor ledger to keep supplier records accurate and up to date.
- Provide cover for colleagues within the finance team during periods of absence and holiday.
- Handle financial data accurately and confidentially, and follow JSM’s financial controls and approval processes.
- Complete your apprenticeship coursework and build your knowledge with our support – including sitting in with colleagues elsewhere in finance and the wider business.
What you’ll study
- You’ll work towards the Assistant Accountant Level 3 standard (ST0002), achieving the AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting as your on-programme qualification – typically around 15 months plus an end-point assessment.
- Study is usually blended (day-release or online) with a training provider, with paid time set aside for your off-the-job learning. Your apprenticeship is funded by JSM Group.
- You’ll cover financial and management accounting techniques, advanced bookkeeping and final accounts, indirect tax, business awareness, ethical standards for accountants, and the use of accounting software and spreadsheets.
- On completion we’ll talk with you about your next step. Options may include progressing to the Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship and working towards full AAT membership (MAAT). Any funded progression will depend on the apprenticeship funding rules in place at the time.

- A team player with a helpful, professional manner when dealing with suppliers and colleagues.
- The ability to explain something clearly and to listen properly to what someone needs.
- Organised and reliable, and willing to take responsibility for seeing things through.
- Any exposure to bookkeeping, Excel or finance systems – school, college, a course or your own interest – is welcome but not essential.
- Right to work in the UK.
