Beale Wildlife Park, Lower Basildon
We are looking for an experienced and practical Health & Safety Lead to oversee and strengthen health and safety arrangements across Beale Wildlife Park and its wider estate.
This is a varied environment incorporating a licensed zoo, visitor attraction, miniature railway, catering outlets, swimming pool, gardens, maintenance operations and approximately 350 acres of estate. Key Responsibilities
- Act as the organisation’s internal lead and competent adviser on health and safety.
- Maintain and continually improve our health and safety management system.
- Undertake regular inspections, audits and risk reviews across the Park and estate.
- Maintain a central action plan and monitor recommendations through to verified completion.
- Support managers in preparing and reviewing risk assessments, safe systems of work and COSHH assessments.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, identifying underlying causes and corrective actions.
- Ensure appropriate incidents are reported under RIDDOR and accurate records are maintained.
- Monitor staff training requirements and help promote a positive, open safety culture.
- Provide advice on contractor management, public safety, machinery, chemicals and other operational risks.
- Liaise with our external health and safety consultants, insurers and regulatory bodies.
- Provide concise reports and assurance to the CEO, senior management team and trustees.
- Ensure employees have accessible and confidential ways to raise concerns, and that concerns are recorded and addressed promptly.
Essential requirements
- A recognised health and safety qualification, ideally the NEBOSH National General Certificate, or an equivalent qualification at Level 3 or above.
- Practical experience of managing health and safety in a varied operational environment.
- Sound working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation, risk assessment, COSHH, RIDDOR and incident investigation.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain clear, accurate records.
- A practical and proportionate approach, with the ability to communicate effectively with employees at every level.

The role is for 15 hours per week, with the working pattern to be agreed. Regular on-site presence will be essential, with some flexibility.
