As an Apprentice Fleet Technician, you will work alongside our experienced Transport Repair Unit team to help maintain, service and repair the Council's diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, including Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). This is an excellent opportunity to develop practical skills and gain hands-on experience whilst studying towards a Level 3 Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (Heavy) qualification.
You will learn how to inspect, service and repair a range of vehicles, use specialist diagnostic equipment, prepare vehicles for MOT, and support the maintenance of key systems such as brakes, hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical components. Working in a busy fleet workshop, you will play an important role in helping to ensure vehicles remain safe, compliant and available to deliver essential services to our communities.
This apprenticeship combines practical workplace experience with formal training, providing a structured pathway into a rewarding career within the motor vehicle industry.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual who has a genuine interest in vehicle maintenance and mechanics. You will be keen to learn, willing to develop new skills and committed to working safely and professionally at all times.
The successful candidate will have good communication and teamwork skills, a positive attitude, strong attention to detail and a willingness to take pride in their work. You should be able to follow instructions, demonstrate a strong work ethic and be committed to completing the apprenticeship programme.
You will need GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English. An interest in Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) or vehicle maintenance would be advantageous, although full training will be provided.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to start a career in fleet maintenance and gain a nationally recognised qualification while earning and learning.
Fareham Borough Council is a great place to work. The low staff turnover and high number of employees that have worked here for 20 years or more is testament to this, and you would be joining an organisation that has a real family feel to it.
We take pride in receiving feedback from others who say we are a friendly and professional organisation. We aim to attract, develop and retain the very best people to carry out the work required.
In return, you would be joining a well-managed Council. We offer a great pension scheme, authorised parking, flexible working and a car lease scheme to name a few of the benefits of working for us.
Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)
As part of Local Government Reorganisation, current plans will see us combine with Portsmouth City Council and the borough councils of Gosport and Havant and parts of East Hampshire and Winchester district councils to form a new, larger unitary authority for South East Hampshire.
We are working towards an implementation date of 1st April 2028, known as vesting day, subject to Parliamentary approval. Until then, we remain focused on maintaining continuity, supporting our workforce, and continuing to deliver excellent services to our residents throughout the transition to the new unitary authority.
This is an exciting time to join us, offering the opportunity to contribute to organisational transformation, develop your career, and help shape future services for our communities.
