Head of Conveyancing, Complaints & Compliance

Gowlings Solicitors is seeking an experienced Qualified Solicitor to join our senior team as Head of Conveyancing, Complaints & Compliance.
This is a key leadership position with responsibility for overseeing our conveyancing department, complaints handling, regulatory compliance and risk management, while ensuring that Gowlings Solicitors continues to deliver excellent service and maintain the highest professional standards.
The Role
You will provide strategic and operational leadership across conveyancing, complaints and compliance, with responsibilities including:
- Leading and developing the conveyancing department, driving quality, efficiency and excellent client outcomes.
- Overseeing compliance with SRA requirements, the SRA Standards and Regulations, AML obligations and other relevant regulatory requirements.
- Managing and overseeing client complaints, ensuring fair, timely and professional resolution.
- Identifying trends and root causes arising from complaints and implementing improvements.
- Providing guidance on complex conveyancing, compliance, AML, client-care and professional conduct matters.
- Undertaking file reviews, compliance monitoring and internal audits.
- Monitoring regulatory developments and ensuring Gowlings Solicitors’ policies and procedures remain up to date.
- Supporting the firm’s COLP/COFA and senior management team, as applicable.
- Developing and delivering training across the firm on compliance, risk and best practice.
- Monitoring key risk and performance indicators and reporting to senior management.
- Promoting a positive culture of quality, accountability, compliance and continuous improvement.
About You
To be considered for this role, you must be a qualified solicitor in England and Wales with substantial experience in residential conveyancing and a strong understanding of compliance and risk within an SRA-regulated legal practice.
You will ideally have:
- Current qualification as a Solicitor of England and Wales.
- Significant residential conveyancing experience, including management or leadership experience.
- Strong knowledge of SRA regulatory requirements and professional standards.
- Good practical knowledge of AML, source of funds/source of wealth and conveyancing risk.
- Experience dealing with client complaints and complex service issues.
- Excellent analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- The confidence to make sound, risk-based decisions and challenge constructively where necessary.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
