Role and Responsibilities
- The Finance Assistant (Credit Control & Purchase Ledger) is responsible for supporting the day-to-day financial operations of the business by managing customer debt, maintaining accurate purchase ledger records and helping to ensure healthy cash flow. This is a hands-on operational role with the opportunity to develop into a more senior position as the business continues to grow.
- As experience and knowledge develop, there will be opportunities to take ownership of wider credit management responsibilities, contribute to process improvements and support strategic financial decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Control
- Monitor customer accounts and outstanding balances.
- Chase overdue invoices by telephone and email in a professional manner.
- Allocate incoming customer payments accurately.
- Reconcile customer accounts and investigate discrepancies.
- Resolve customer account queries efficiently.
- Negotiate payment arrangements where appropriate.
- Produce aged debtor reports for review.
- Escalate overdue or high-risk accounts to the Finance Manager or Finance Director.
- Assist with legal recovery processes and external debt collection agencies where required.
- Build positive working relationships with customers whilst maintaining effective credit control procedures.
Purchase Ledger
- Process supplier invoices accurately and in a timely manner.
- Match purchase orders, delivery notes and supplier invoices.
- Resolve supplier invoice queries.
- Reconcile supplier statements and investigate discrepancies.
- Prepare supplier payment runs for approval.
- Maintain accurate supplier records.
- Support month-end purchase ledger processes and reconciliations.
- Assist with other finance administration as required.
Development Opportunities
- As you develop within the role, you will have the opportunity to:
- Support customer credit assessments and credit limit reviews.
- Analyse debtor performance and identify trends.
- Recommend improvements to credit control and purchase ledger processes.
- Produce management reporting and cash collection analysis.
- Assist with the implementation of new finance systems and automation.
- Work closely with senior management to support commercial decision-making.
- Progress towards taking ownership of the wider credit management function, including credit policy development, customer risk management and process optimisation.
Key Skills & Experience
- Previous experience within Credit Control, Purchase Ledger or a similar finance role.
- Excellent attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- Confident communicator with excellent telephone and written communication skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with customers and suppliers.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Comfortable adopting new technologies, including AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, to improve efficiency
- Experience using accounting software (Business Central or similar) would be advantageous.
- A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop professionally.
