Binder Limited is a growing and well-established business, and we are currently looking to recruit a Trainee Sewage Treatment Plant Operative to work on and operate our in-house sewage treatment processing plant.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career within the environmental and utilities sector. Full training will be provided, including opportunities to gain recognised qualifications and further education for the right candidate.
The Role
As a Trainee Operative, you will learn all aspects of sewage treatment operations, including the discharge, storage, and processing of liquids, sludges, solids, oils, and other waste streams. You will be trained in the maintenance, daily inspection, and cleaning of process equipment, as well as the safe removal and disposal of segregated waste.
You will also be responsible for monitoring and controlling visiting contractors discharging waste at the sewage treatment facility. Entry into tanks is strictly controlled under confined space working procedures, and the successful candidate will be supported to achieve City & Guilds confined space qualifications.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Full training will be provided, and duties will include:
- Working safely in accordance with method statements and company procedures
- Monitoring and recording flows and final effluent data
- Checking dissolved oxygen levels in tanks
- Starting and operating centrifuges
- Setting pumps to maintain correct levels
- Removing clear liquor and discharging to balance storage tanks
- Pumping sludge to holding tanks and carrying out wash-down procedures
- Draining sludge and taking daily solids readings from aeration tanks
- Maintaining the oil separation plant
- Prioritising workload effectively
- Communicating clearly with colleagues and contractors
- Attending team meetings and training as required
- Keeping up to date with company policies and procedures

Essential Requirements
- Eligible to work in the UK
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable (but not essential)
- Qualifications in biology or a related discipline
- Previous technical knowledge of sewage treatment plants
- Confined Space Entry qualification
- Abrasive Wheel qualification
- CSCS card
- Basic electrical training
- Emergency First Aid at Work qualification
- Clean driving licence
