About Sussex Gender Service (SGS)
Sussex Gender Service is an NHS adult gender service pilot in Sussex, which has been commissioned to provide local transgender healthcare for trans and non-binary people (TNBI). We are staffed by a team of administrators, care navigators, clinical nurse specialists, GPs, psychologists and speech & language therapists.
Our vision & mission
A collaborative, respectful and holistic approach, valuing each individual experience, meeting TNBI people where they are in their journey and providing excellent care. We prioritise reflection and learning from our work alongside the input of our community groups.
We provide compassionate, safe, supportive and holistic care to TNBI people to enable them to live as their most authentic selves.
The role
We are looking for a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to lead on a gender‑affirming voice therapy caseload. You will deliver a blend of individual and group interventions, supporting people to develop evidence‑based voice skills aligned with their personal and authentic voice goals.
Alongside your clinical work, you will play a key role in the development and delivery of the service, working closely with the Principal SLT to support day‑to‑day operations. You will also contribute to the growth of the team through supervision and support of a Band 6 SLT and an SLT Expert by Experience.
Core responsibilities
Deliver highly specialist, gender‑affirming voice therapy
Hold and manage a complex specialist caseload
Play a key role in service development and innovation
Work as a valued member of a dynamic multidisciplinary team
Provide clinical leadership, supervision, and training
Champion best practice and raise awareness of the SLT role
Speech and Language Therapists in the voice team are based at St Peter’s Health Centre in Brighton, conveniently located less than half a mile from Brighton Station—just a 10‑minute walk. You will have access to a purpose‑built, sound‑treated voice therapy room, with the flexibility to work both on site and from home. We are committed to supporting flexible working and offer a range of options, including flexible hours, part‑time roles, job sharing, and hybrid working. Home working is well supported, with funded equipment provided to help you work comfortably and effectively.
At Sussex Gender Service, we are committed to building a diverse and representative workforce. We recognise that our current team is predominantly White British, and we are actively working to broaden this. We warmly welcome applications from people who are trans, non‑binary or intersex, and from those of Global Majority backgrounds.
We place a strong emphasis on staff wellbeing and development. You will be supported through regular supervision, annual appraisals, reflective practice sessions, and access to coaching and mentoring. Staff are also encouraged to connect through our eight staff networks, with protected time to attend meetings and events.
We are committed to creating an accessible working environment. We can provide equipment and software, such as speech‑to‑text tools, ergonomic equipment, and will support you to apply for additional funding (e.g. Access to Work) where appropriate.
