We are seeking a compassionate and resilient Mental Health Support Worker to help people experiencing mental health crises access support, stability and hope.
Salary: £13.05 per hour (time and half paid for hour worked midnight to 1am)
Location: Chelmsford, Essex
Contract: Zero hour bank contract
Hours: 7 hour shifts 18:00 – 01:00, shifts available 7 days per week including Bank Holidays
About the Role
Mid Essex Sanctuary provides vital support to individuals at risk of experiencing a mental health crisis. As a Mental Health Support Worker, you will play a key role in delivering compassionate, person-centred support that helps people manage challenging situations, improve wellbeing and avoid unnecessary admissions to urgent or emergency services.
Working as part of an experienced and supportive team, you will use active listening, de-escalation and wellbeing techniques to support individuals on a one-to-one basis and connect them with appropriate services and resources.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing emotional and practical support to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties.
- Assessing referrals and determining suitability in line with service procedures.
- Identifying individual needs and supporting people to develop coping strategies and wellbeing skills.
- Signposting and referring individuals to internal and external support services.
- Maintaining accurate and timely case records.
- Working closely with colleagues, referrers and partner agencies.
- Following safeguarding, confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Participating in supervision, training, team meetings and continuous professional development.
- Contributing to the ongoing development and improvement of the service.
About You
You will be an empathetic and approachable individual with the ability to remain calm under pressure and build positive relationships with a wide range of people.
You will have:
- Experience supporting people through emotionally challenging situations or mental health crises.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good IT and record-keeping skills.
- An understanding of professional boundaries and the importance of providing a safe, supportive environment.
- A commitment to inclusion, collaboration and person-centred support.
Mental Health First Aid training, a mental health-related qualification, safeguarding knowledge or experience of group work would be advantageous.
