Sous Chef

The Tap House is an independent country pub, restaurant, accommodation and brewery in Smisby, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
We are looking for an experienced and dependable Sous Chef to join our kitchen team and work closely alongside our Head Chef.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is confident running a busy service, maintaining high standards and helping lead the kitchen team. You will play an important part in the day-to-day operation of the kitchen and will be expected to take responsibility when the Head Chef is away.
As Sous Chef, you will:
- Support the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen
- Lead services and manage the kitchen in the Head Chef's absence
- Prepare, cook and present dishes consistently to a high standard
- Help organise prep and ensure the kitchen is ready for service
- Supervise, support and train junior members of the kitchen team
- Maintain standards of portion control, presentation and consistency
- Assist with ordering, stock rotation, stock control and waste management
- Maintain excellent food hygiene, cleaning and health & safety standards
- Work closely with the front-of-house team to ensure smooth service
- Prepare and develop desserts for our menu and specials
We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience in a Sous Chef or strong Chef de Partie role
- Is confident running a section and leading a service
- Has experience preparing desserts and enjoys developing new dessert ideas
- Can remain organised and composed during busy periods
- Takes pride in food quality, presentation and consistency
- Has good knowledge of food hygiene and kitchen procedures
- Is reliable, hardworking and able to lead by example
- Communicates well with both kitchen and front-of-house teams
- Is comfortable taking responsibility when the Head Chef is not present
Experience within a busy pub or restaurant kitchen would be particularly beneficial.
Experience and a genuine interest in making desserts would be a strong advantage.
Due to our semi-rural location, reliable transport is essential.
Working Hours
Typical working pattern:
- Tuesday: 9:00am–9:00pm, with a 1-hour break
- Friday: 5:00pm–9:00pm
- Saturday: 9:00am–9:00pm, with a 1-hour break
- Sunday: 9:00am–9:00pm, with a 1-hour break
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday off each week.
