Salary: £35,000 Working Pattern: Monday – Friday, 09:00-17:00 (with flexibility to cover Operational shifts were required)
Position Overview
The Assistant Operations Manager helps oversee the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the depot’s 24/7 delivery. They support the Operations Manager by overseeing day-to-day events, with responsibility for driver management, compliance, scheduling, service quality, and adherence to transport legislation. The role ensures the smooth delivery of transport services while maintaining high safety standards and cost-effective operations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Compliance & Safety
· Support compliance with PCV transport legislation, including operator licensing requirements.
· Ensure updated records for CPC qualifications, licences, ongoing driver/staff training and tachograph compliance.
· Investigate incidents, accidents, or near-misses, ensure they’re sufficiently recorded and implement corrective actions.
2. Vehicle & Fleet Management
· Ensure efficient communication/liaison with Engineering, regarding concerns with vehicle maintenance, servicing, and roadworthiness, in line with legal and company standards.
· Monitor driver first use check and defect reporting, to
ensure compliance and manage drivers on identifiable defects that appear at PMI.
· Monitor fuel usage, vehicle performance, and telematics data to optimize efficiency.
3. Staff Leadership & Driver Management
· Manage, supervise, and support the driver workforce and Operations Team. Address welfare concerns and/or issues, as well as ongoing training and development. Engage and enable staff.
· Conduct driver/office investigations and/or disciplinary hearings.
· Promote a safety-first and proactive culture, whilst maintaining positive employee relations.
4. Reporting & Data Management
· Use transport management systems, telematics, and scheduling software to monitor KPIs.
· Analyse KPI data, to target problem areas in need of management or development.
· Streamline current or implement new, operational processes to improve service delivery and uphold O’Licence undertakings.
5. Budget & Cost Control
· Assist the OM with managing the transport budget, including maintenance costs, fuel, overtime, and consumables.
· Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or service quality.
Qualifications
Required
· Proven experience managing PCV operations, fleet management, or bus/coach services.
· Strong understanding of UK transport legislation and operator compliance.
· Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
· Experience with transport management systems and telematics.
· Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Transport Management (Passenger Transport) or willingness to complete.
· IOSH/NEBOSH or equivalent safety qualification
· Experience in scheduling, route planning, or logistics operations.

Working Conditions
· Primarily office-based with regular time spent in depots/yards.

Pay: £35,000.00 per year
