Degree programmes are provided in Arts and Humanities, Built Environment, Brain Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Education, Laws, Life Sciences, Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Medical Sciences, Population Health Sciences and Social and Historical Sciences
For more information see http://www.ucl.ac.uk/about.
In our most significant development since our founding, UCL has expanded to east London. Situated on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (QEOP), UCL East is dedicated to disruptive thinking and discovery across disciplines and beyond academic walls, to find solutions to the biggest challenges for future living. We are located in Newham, East London - one of the UK’s most socially diverse areas – and we want our staff recruitment to reflect this diversity.
UCL Engineering
UCL Engineering comprises ten academic departments that undertake research and teaching across a wide range of disciplines. Our scientists and engineers take discoveries from fundamentals to practice, producing innovative technological solutions to challenging problems. It is a dynamic and growing Faculty, with a strong vision and desire to use our talents to ‘Change the world’’. For more information see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/engineering.
Centre for Engineering Education (CEE)
The UCL Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) is a joint centre between the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences and the UCL Institute of Education. It aims to provide research and curriculum development to deliver improved engineering education worldwide. It is actively engaged in the engineering education research community and in using that evidence-based research to deliver innovative and high-quality student experiences at UCL and for external partners through collaborative consultancy projects.
Engineering Foundation Year (EFY)
In 2023, the UCL Centre for Engineering Education within the Faculty of Engineering Sciences launched a new course which reimagines the route to engineering study. The Engineering Foundation Year (EFY), taught at UCL East, has a central aim of widening opportunities for students from under-represented educational backgrounds. Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students will go on to study one of a number of engineering undergraduate programmes at UCL.
UCL Engineering’s Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP)
Our Integrated Engineering Programme is recognised within and outside of UCL for innovation and thought leadership in engineering education. The award-winning Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP) at UCL is a radical model for reimagining undergraduate engineering education. It integrates rigorous disciplinary foundations with applied mathematics, authentic and enquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary project-based learning, and a strong emphasis on professional and transferable skills. The programme adopts skills-based learning approaches that prepare students to address complex global challenges through real-world scenarios involving industry, community, and policy stakeholders.
This is a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover position, commencing on 1st December 2026.
The post-holder will sit within UCL Engineering’s Centre for Engineering Education and will work with colleagues across the faculty to support the continuous development and delivery of the Centre’s Engineering Foundation Year and Integrated Engineering Programme curricula. The Centre seeks to employ an education focused lecturer, ideally with both engineering and higher education teaching experience to lead and support the teaching within year 1 of the EFY and IEP. Industrial experience or experience of level 3 (A-level) teaching would be valuable.
The Engineering Foundation Year has been developed to further our UK widening participation ambitions. Our students include mature students, students from low-participation backgrounds and first-generation students. It is an entry route into most of our Engineering undergraduate degree programmes. The EFY admits student that do not have the qualifications for direct entry to UCL Engineering and will support them, both academically and pastorally, to achieve their potential. The person in this post will support the integration, development and delivery of skills based and project-based learning education within the EFY curriculum. Additionally, they will serve as a personal tutor for a small number of EFY students, supporting students academically as well as in areas of pastoral care and their future career development. This would include supporting EFY students in their transition to their year 1 studies.
The post holder will work with staff across 6 departments within UCL Engineering to develop and teach cross-faculty elements of the year 1 (level 4) Design and Professional Skills I curriculum within the IEP. In the main, the post holder will provide leadership of our Design and Skills curricula and teaching support at faculty level to staff and students in departments.
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:
Postgraduate Qualification (MSc/PhD) in an engineering science discipline or hold equivalent qualifications and / or experience
Experience of Curriculum, Programme and/or Module Leadership and Development
The ability to work independently, to lead and work successfully as part of a team, recognising when advice / input needs to be sought
Experience of developing and delivering project-based learning and teaching at a level appropriate for Foundation and/or Year 1 Engineering students
