Head of Technical & Design

Industrial Roofing Scotland (IRS) is looking for a Head of Technical & Design to join our Senior Leadership Team. You'll lead the planning, design, and technical sign-off of our Direct to Client / Contracting and maintenance, repairs & inspections (MRI) workstreams, ensuring innovative, compliant, and high-quality technical solutions are delivered from concept through to operational execution.
This is a key leadership role, working closely with the Commercial, Operations, and SHEQ functions to drive technical excellence, optimise design and engineering resources, and ensure every project meets current regulations and manufacturer, Industrial Roofing Scotland and NFRC requirements.
What you'll be doing
- Leading the design process, ensuring technical delivery meets project specifications and translating concepts into clear, compliant, cost-effective designs ready for operations.
- Developing and implementing technical standards, design processes, and best practices, embedding these into the Project Execution Process (PEP).
- Reviewing and approving designs, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Tracking design delivery via PEP gateways and reporting weekly performance to ensure on-time handover to Operations.
- Line managing the Technical & Design department, working with HR on appraisals, performance management, coaching, and succession planning.
- Ensuring all designs and technical solutions comply with industry regulations, standards, and company SHEQ policies.
- Applying value engineering principles to optimise designs, reduce costs, and maximise commercial and operational value.
- Working closely with the Heads of Sales & Estimating, Operations, Systems & Marketing and SHEQ to ensure operational readiness for new projects.
- Providing technical input during tender and design stages, and guidance during project delivery, troubleshooting complex technical challenges.
- Driving the implementation of operational systems and digital tools to improve efficiency and reporting.
What we're looking for
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in construction management, civil engineering, building studies, project management, surveying, or a related field, or an HND/HNC/foundation degree/BTEC in a similar subject.
- Significant industry experience (5+ years in Operations/Project Management or site supervision), with a strong track record in technical or design leadership.
- In-depth knowledge of construction methods, materials, processes and techniques, and advanced understanding of UK construction regulations, including CDM 2015.
- Proficiency in construction-specific software and tools, such as AutoCAD, along with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire, coordinate and develop personnel effectively.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills, with sound commercial and business acumen.
- A full UK driving licence.

- Reports to the Director; line manager of the Technical & Design department.
- Office / site based, with home working considered.
- A key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
