Position: Bridge Inspector (Technical)
Location: County Hall, PR1 8RE
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 1+ Months (Temporary contract)
Working Hours: 37 hours per week
Pay Rate: PAYE: £16.90 per hour
What We're Looking For
We are looking for an experienced Bridge / Highway Structures Inspector to inspect and record the condition of highway structures across the Lancashire highway network.
The successful candidate must have:
- BICS Lantra Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme or an ADEPT-approved equivalent – essential
- Experience assessing highway structures in accordance with CS450 – essential
- Experience in building, surveying, civil engineering or another construction-related discipline
- Good knowledge of highway bridge inspection standards, guidance and procedures
- Good time management and the ability to prioritise workloads
- Good organisational skills, accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and confidently on site, including lone working
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and internet applications
- Ideally, experience using highways asset management systems and GIS mapping software
- Full UK driving licence – essential
- Ability to use basic survey equipment
- Reasonable level of fitness, as the role involves accessing different areas of bridges and carrying survey equipment
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Carry out General, Special and Monitoring inspections of highway structures
- Inspect bridges, retaining walls, rural footbridges, high mast lighting columns and other structures for defects
- Access all reasonably accessible areas of structures to identify and record defects
- Record and retrieve inspection information using electronic asset management systems
- Use relevant survey equipment and IT systems to collect accurate information
- Assist with the management of the General Inspection programme
- Support the development of structural capital and reactive maintenance programmes
- Support highway asset management plans and maintenance/renewal policies
- Liaise with clients, design teams, structure owners and other third parties
- Liaise with organisations such as Network Rail, National Highways, English Heritage and Canal & River Trust where required
- Supervise contractors and statutory undertakers on site where required
- Ensure relevant County work standards are followed
- Assist with resolving bridge ownership and other structure-related queries
- Manage and respond to correspondence relating to bridge matters
- Work safely in accordance with lone-working and health & safety procedures
- Undertake training and ongoing professional development as required

Essential Qualifications & Certifications
- BICS Lantra Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme or ADEPT-approved equivalent
- Relevant vocational qualification or equivalent technical training/experience
- CSCS card
- Personal Track Safety (PTS) certificate
- Recognised First Aid certificate
- Confined Space certification
- Full UK driving licence
Essential Experience
- Experience in building, surveying, civil engineering or a related construction discipline
- Experience inspecting/assessing highway structures
- Experience applying relevant bridge inspection procedures and standards
- Experience assessing structures in accordance with CS450
- Experience working independently with specialist equipment, systems or IT software
- Experience using basic survey equipment
- Experience dealing with members of the public and Councillors
