Manchester City Centre | Full-Time, Part-Time or Locum | Hybrid Working Available
MSD Solicitors is seeking an experienced Senior Family Law Solicitor to join and help develop our growing Family Law department.
We welcome applications from candidates seeking a permanent full-time position, a permanent part-time role, or a locum arrangement. A hybrid working arrangement is also available, subject to experience, availability, client requirements, and the needs of the department.
This is an opportunity for an accomplished family lawyer to manage a high-quality, privately funded caseload while taking an active role in supervising the team, developing the department, and supporting the firm’s continued growth.

As part of our continued expansion, we are looking for a senior solicitor who combines strong technical expertise with leadership ability, commercial awareness, and a genuine interest in developing a successful family law practice.
The Role
You will independently manage a varied and complex privately funded family law caseload, including divorce, financial remedy proceedings, private children matters, domestic abuse cases, and related disputes.
Alongside your fee-earning responsibilities, you will help supervise junior members of the department, maintain high standards of client service, and contribute to business development and departmental strategy.
The role can be structured on a:
- Full-time permanent basis
- Part-time permanent basis
- Locum or consultancy basis
- Hybrid working basis, with an agreed combination of office and remote working
The precise arrangement will be agreed depending on the successful candidate’s experience, availability, and the operational requirements of the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a complex privately funded family law caseload from initial instruction through to conclusion
- Advise clients on divorce, separation, financial remedies, private children matters, domestic abuse, and associated family law issues
- Handle complex and high-value financial disputes, including matters involving businesses, pensions, property portfolios, and significant assets
- Draft applications, statements, consent orders, position statements, and other legal documents
- Conduct advocacy and represent clients at court hearings where appropriate
- Provide clear, practical, and strategic advice to clients
- Maintain strong client relationships and deliver consistently high standards of client care
- Supervise, mentor, and support junior solicitors, paralegals, and legal support staff
- Ensure files are managed in accordance with regulatory, compliance, and internal quality standards
- Contribute to business development, networking, referral relationships, and marketing initiatives
- Support the continued growth, profitability, and development of the Family Law department
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Qualification as a Solicitor in England and Wales
- At least 3 years’ post-qualification experience in Family Law, although applications from candidates with equivalent experience will be considered
- Strong experience managing privately funded family law matters independently
- Experience handling divorce, financial remedy, and private children proceedings
- The ability to manage complex, sensitive, and high-value cases
- Strong drafting, negotiation, advocacy, and case management skills
- Excellent communication and client care abilities
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff
- A commercial approach to fee earning and departmental development
- A proven ability to generate work, build professional relationships, or contribute to business development
- The confidence and initiative to help drive the department forward
- The ability to work effectively and independently within a hybrid or flexible working structure
