We are looking for an ambitious and commercially driven External Sales Manager to join our successful team at our St Albans branch.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced sales professional to take ownership of an established territory, build lasting customer relationships and play a key role in the continued growth of our business.
About the Role
As our External Sales Manager, you will be responsible for driving profitable sales growth by managing existing customer relationships while actively developing new business opportunities across your territory.
Working closely with the Branch Manager and Internal Sales team, you will identify opportunities, secure projects and ensure customers receive an outstanding level of service from enquiry through to delivery.
This is a field-based role suited to someone who enjoys building relationships, identifying opportunities and delivering measurable commercial results.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and grow a portfolio of existing trade and key account customers.
- Identify, prospect and win new business opportunities across your territory.
- Build long-term relationships with contractors, housebuilders, developers and trade professionals.
- Generate enquiries and convert opportunities into profitable sales.
- Prepare quotations, negotiate pricing and manage tender opportunities.
- Develop and implement a targeted sales strategy to achieve agreed sales and margin objectives.
- Analyse weekly sales performance, identifying trends and opportunities for growth.
- Monitor competitor activity and market developments, responding proactively to maximise opportunities.
- Work closely with Internal Sales and Branch colleagues to ensure exceptional customer service.
- Represent Buttle's professionally, promoting the company's reputation, products and values at every opportunity.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with the drive, experience and commercial awareness to make an immediate impact.
You will have:
- A proven track record in external sales within a builders' merchant, construction materials or related industry.
- Strong knowledge of heavyside building materials and the merchant sector.
- Demonstrable success in winning new business and growing existing customer accounts.
- Excellent negotiation and relationship management skills.
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to maximise sales and profitability.
- Experience of pricing projects, tenders and large quotations.
- A proactive and self-motivated approach with excellent organisational skills.
- The ability to manage your own diary and prioritise effectively.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- A full, clean UK driving licence (essential).
