Role Purpose
As a Barber at The Retreat at Matfen Hall, you will provide a premium grooming experience that combines traditional barbering craftsmanship with modern luxury hospitality. You will deliver precision haircuts, beard grooming and wet shaves within an elegant wellness environment, ensuring every guest enjoys exceptional service and leaves looking and feeling their best.
Working alongside the wider spa and wellness team, you will help establish The Retreat as the destination of choice for discerning gentlemen seeking expert grooming and relaxation.
Key ResponsibilitiesGuest Experience
- Deliver personalised consultations to understand each guest's grooming preferences and lifestyle.
- Provide precision haircuts, skin fades, beard sculpting, moustache styling and luxury grooming services.
- Perform traditional hot towel shaves and luxury wet shaves (where qualified).
- Create a welcoming, relaxed and refined atmosphere that reflects the standards of Matfen Hall.
- Build lasting relationships with guests through exceptional service and attention to detail.
- Encourage repeat visits through consistent excellence and personalised care.
Technical Excellence
- Deliver classic and contemporary barbering services to the highest professional standards.
- Maintain expert knowledge of current grooming trends, techniques and products.
- Provide beard treatments, scalp care and luxury grooming rituals.
- Maintain impeccable hygiene, cleanliness and equipment maintenance in accordance with industry regulations.
- Keep accurate consultation records and service notes where appropriate.
Retail & Commercial Performance
- Recommend premium grooming products tailored to individual guest needs.
- Promote retail sales through knowledgeable and authentic product recommendations.
- Maximise appointment opportunities and encourage future bookings.
- Support seasonal promotions, membership offers and exclusive grooming experiences.
Teamwork
- Collaborate with spa therapists, hair stylists, reception and wellness teams to create seamless guest experiences.
- Support wedding parties, corporate events, golf groups and VIP guests with bespoke grooming services.
- Participate in training, product launches and team meetings.
- Contribute ideas to continually enhance the grooming experience at The Retreat.
Key Skills & ExperienceEssential
- Recognised Barbering Qualification (NVQ Level 2 Barbering or equivalent).
- Proven experience within a professional barbershop or luxury grooming environment.
- Expertise in precision cutting, clipper work, fades and beard shaping.
- Excellent consultation and interpersonal skills.
- Professional appearance and outstanding personal presentation.
- Flexible approach to evenings, weekends and peak trading periods.
Desirable
- Traditional wet shaving certification.
- Experience working within luxury hotels, private clubs or destination spas.
- Knowledge of premium men's grooming brands.
- Experience providing grooming services for weddings and special events.
- Hair replacement or scalp treatment experience.
