Role Summary
We are seeking a proactive and hands-on Engineering Technician – Mechanical to support the design, development, assembly, testing, and validation of innovative products and technologies. Working closely with mechanical, electronics, electro-magnetic, and manufacturing engineers, you will play a key role in building prototypes, conducting tests, preparing engineering equipment, and troubleshooting mechanical systems throughout the product development lifecycle.
This role is ideal for a practical technician with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoys turning engineering concepts into working prototypes and contributing directly to the development of cutting-edge products.
Key Responsibilities
- Support engineers in the development, assembly, and testing of new products and prototype systems.
- Build, modify, and maintain mechanical prototypes, fixtures, test rigs, and laboratory equipment.
- Assist with mechanical design verification and validation activities.
- Assemble precision mechanical components, assemblies, and electromechanical systems.
- Conduct performance, durability, environmental, and functional testing of mechanical products and subsystems.
- Install instrumentation and sensors to support engineering testing and data collection.
- Perform fault finding, root cause analysis, and corrective actions on prototype and development hardware.
- Support the preparation, operation, and maintenance of engineering test facilities and equipment.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly instructions, and technical specifications.
- Assist with the fabrication, machining, modification, and fitting of prototype components.
- Accurately record test results and build data and maintain engineering documentation.
- Work with engineering teams to identify opportunities for product improvement and increased reliability.
- Support prototype build activities, design reviews, and development programmes.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, quality, and laboratory procedures.
- Maintain an organised, safe, and efficient workshop and laboratory environment.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- ONC/HNC, Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3+, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in a mechanical engineering, R&D, product development, manufacturing, or testing environment.
- Hands-on experience assembling and testing mechanical or electromechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T symbols, and technical documentation.
- Competence in the use of workshop tools, measuring equipment, and test instrumentation.
- Practical experience with mechanical assembly, fitting, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Good organisational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Desirable Skills
- Experience supporting the development of motors, propulsion systems, rotating machinery, or powertrain products.
- Familiarity with CAD software and engineering drawing packages.
- Experience using precision measurement equipment such as micrometers, verniers, CMMs, and dial indicators.
- Basic machining skills including drilling, and fabrication.
- Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly techniques.
- Experience with environmental, vibration, thermal, or endurance testing.
- Exposure to aerospace, automotive, industrial, robotics, or electrification sectors.
- Understanding of design for manufacture (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA) principles.
