We are not simply looking for “front of house staff”.
We are looking for someone who understands hospitality properly.
The Sword Inn Hand is an independent, award-recognised country pub and restaurant in the beautiful village of Westmill, just outside Buntingford. We have recently received both an OpenTable Diners’ Award and TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice recognition — but more importantly, we’ve built a reputation for genuinely warm, memorable service delivered by a team who care.
We are now looking for an experienced Front of House professional to join us full-time.
This role is for somebody who:
- Naturally makes guests feel comfortable and looked after
- Notices the small details others miss
- Thrives in busy service without losing warmth or personality
- Understands that hospitality is about creating memorable experiences, not just taking orders
- Takes pride in standards, professionalism and teamwork
Experience matters to us here.
We are ideally looking for someone with a minimum of 3 years’ experience in quality hospitality environments.
The role:
- Full-time position (typically 35–40 hours per week following probation)
- Mixture of weekday, evening and weekend shifts
- Monthly rota with flexibility where possible
- Strong, generous tips structure
- Opportunity to grow within an ambitious independent business
What makes us different:
We genuinely care about the atmosphere we create — both for guests and for the team.
This is a busy, energetic workplace with a close-knit group of people who enjoy working together. We support each other, have high standards, share a drink after service, play good music, and believe hospitality should still feel personal.
We are a destination venue, which means attention to detail, personality and initiative really matter here.
Daily responsibilities include:
- Welcoming and hosting guests confidently
- Delivering attentive, knowledgeable table service
- Running sections professionally during busy services
- Working closely with the kitchen and bar teams
- Maintaining excellent cleanliness and presentation standards
- Supporting food and drinks service across the business
- Handling guest requests and resolving issues with professionalism and care
What we’re really looking for:
Someone memorable.
A great personality. Calm under pressure. Genuine warmth. Professional standards. Someone who guests remember for the right reasons and teammates trust during busy service.
If you think that sounds like you, we would genuinely love to hear from you.
Application questions:
- Tell us about a time you turned an unhappy guest into a happy one — what did you do differently?
- What does hospitality mean to you in one sentence?
- What part of hospitality gives you the most satisfaction, even on difficult days?
- What would previous managers or teammates say you do better than anyone else?
