Job Summary
SearchLight Counselling and Therapy (formerly Relate West Surrey) is a well-established Surrey charity providing counselling and therapeutic support to individuals, couples, children, young people and families.
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Family Counsellor to join our clinical team. This role provides an opportunity to support families experiencing relationship difficulties, communication challenges, separation, parenting concerns and other family issues.
The role is primarily face-to-face and will involve working across our Woking and Esher locations, with some online counselling where appropriate.

About the role
The successful candidate will:
- Provide counselling and therapeutic support to families experiencing a range of relationship and family challenges.
- Deliver counselling sessions primarily face-to-face from our Woking and Esher locations.
- Undertake family assessments and support clients in accessing the most appropriate service.
- Work with parents, children and wider family members where appropriate.
- Manage risk appropriately and work within safeguarding procedures.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records in line with data protection requirements.
- Work within professional ethical frameworks and best practice guidance.
- Participate in mandatory clinical supervision, team meetings and ongoing professional development.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure a coordinated and client-centred service.
- Contribute to maintaining a safe, welcoming and inclusive therapeutic environment.
The role offers flexible hours based on client referrals and demand, with counselling sessions expected to take place across daytime, evening and occasional weekend periods.
Experience
- A recognised counselling qualification to Level 5 or above for family therapy.
- Experience of providing counselling or therapeutic support to families.
- Experience of conducting assessments and developing treatment plans.
- Understanding of family systems and relationship dynamics.
- Knowledge of safeguarding legislation, procedures and best practice.
- Excellent communication and record-keeping skills.
- A commitment to anti-discriminatory and inclusive practice.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Professional accreditation with BACP, UKCP, AFT or equivalent professional body.
- Experience of working within a counselling charity or agency setting.
- Experience of working with separated or blended families.
- Experience of delivering counselling both online and face-to-face.
- Experience of using electronic client management systems.
- Experience of delivering psycho-educational groups or workshops.
- Additional specialist training in family therapy, parenting support or relationship counselling.
