Job Overview.
The Veteran Support Driver plays an important role in aiding veterans leaving custody by providing safe, reliable transport from prison to their initial probation appointment and/or onward resettlement location. The role helps ensure veterans complete their mandatory post custody appointments and begin their re-integration back into the community.
The role is primarily a driving role which requires professionalism, reliability, good communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work calmly and safely with veterans who may be anxious following a period in a custodial setting and/or vulnerable and seeking support.
The role is part time at 22.5 hours per week (0.6 FTE) and the annual salary is £30,385 (pro-rata). The role will require flexibility with regards availability in order to meet operational and business need.
Duties will include and not be limited to:
- Collecting veterans on the day of release from designated prisons.
- Transport veterans to their probation appointment and/or accommodation or agreed residential location.
- Provide 121 support, information, advice and guidance to the veteran.
- Plan routes and timings to ensure all appointments are attended on time.
- Maintain regular communications with HQ designated POC regarding collections, delays or issues in accordance with charity policies and procedures.
- Maintain the cleanliness, safety and roadworthiness of the charity vehicle, reporting any defects or servicing issues to line management.
- Complete basic journey records and mileage logs.
- Complete records using CRM.
- Follow all safeguarding, lone working and health and safety procedures.
- Always maintain appropriate professional boundaries with service users.
- Report any incidents, concerns, or safeguarding issues in line with charity policies.
- Read and sign as understanding, the Risk Assessments and journey requirements 24 hours prior to collection.
- Maintain accurate records on CRM/IT systems.
- Represent Care after Combat as required and always work in line with our aims, values and plans.
- Other duties may be assigned by the CEO or senior management.
Experience
- Be a veteran, or have relevant experience working with the Armed Forces, the prison service, or a veteran's charity.
- Confident and safe driver, preferably with experience of driving in a previous role.
- Valid full and clean driver’s licence.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams and grades.
- Able to work independently and follow procedures. Give accurate and timely information, advice and guidance.
- Strong communication skills to interact professionally with veterans and team members.
Skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to network and communicate effectively with relevant outside agencies and staff.
- Able to accept responsibility and to respond confidently and calmly when managing workload.
- Able to work on own initiative, self-motivate and progress own work to deadlines once guidelines have been set.
- Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements (aged 30 on appointment) set by our vehicle insurance policy. Proof of eligibility will be required.
- Due to restrictions within our company vehicle insurance policy, applicants must meet the insurers minimum age criteria to be authorised to drive for work purposes.
- This role involves driving company vehicles. Applicants must satisfy the eligibility criteria set by our motor insurance provider.
