Protectavan are looking for a reliable and practically minded Trainee Van Lock & Security Fitter to join our team. www.protectavan.co.uk
Working alongside an experienced fitter, you will learn how to install mechanical and electronic security products on vans and light commercial vehicles. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working with vehicles, tools and technical equipment.
Previous van-security or locksmith experience is not essential, as full product and installation training will be provided. However, you must be willing to learn, work carefully and take pride in producing a professional finish.
Key responsibilities
- Under the supervision of an experienced fitter, you will learn to:
- Inspect vehicles and confirm the correct security products and fitting positions.
- Install van HookLocks, DeadLocks, ArmourShells and SlamHandles.
- Fit upgraded driver-door locks, including RepLock-type products.
- Install latch protection, anti-drill plates, door-reinforcement products and anti-peel protection.
- Fit loom guards and other protection for vulnerable vehicle wiring.
- Install OBD-port security and other electrical-system protection products.
- Fit catalytic-converter guards, spare-wheel protection, bonnet protection, pedal boxes and internal cargo-area security products.
- Safely remove and refit vehicle trim, handles, panels and other components.
- Measure, mark, drill and cut vehicle panels accurately using approved templates and fitting instructions.
- Apply corrosion protection, sealants and finishing materials to maintain a clean, weather-resistant installation.
- Carry out basic wiring work where required, following training and approved procedures.
- Test every product after installation and complete the required quality and safety checks.
- Protect customers’ vehicles from accidental damage and keep the working area clean.
- Complete job sheets, photographs, serial-number records and installation paperwork accurately.
- Explain the operation and maintenance of fitted products to customers.
- Maintain tools, equipment, stock and company vehicles.
- Follow all health and safety, manual-handling and safe-working procedures.
- Travel to customer, dealership and fleet locations when required.
Training and development
You will receive structured, supervised training covering:
- Safe use of hand and power tools.
- Van construction, door mechanisms and locking systems.
- Mechanical security-lock installation.
- Vehicle trim removal and refitting.
- Basic automotive electrical systems.
- Product selection and vehicle compatibility.
- Corrosion prevention and installation finishing.
- Fault identification and quality control.
- Customer service and vehicle handover.
- Working independently and managing installation appointments.
As your skills and experience develop, you will progress towards completing installations independently as a qualified Van Security Fitter.
Essential requirements
- A genuine interest in vehicles, security products or practical engineering.
- Good practical ability and confidence using—or learning to use—hand and power tools.
- Careful attention to detail and the ability to follow technical instructions.
- A responsible approach when working on customers’ vehicles.
- Good communication and customer-service skills.
- Reliable, punctual and willing to learn.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically able to work inside and around commercial vehicles.
- Willing to travel and work at different locations.
- A full UK driving licence.
Desirable experience
The following would be helpful but is not essential:
- Experience in vehicle mechanics, bodywork, maintenance or accessories.
- Locksmith, fabrication, engineering or installation experience.
- Basic automotive electrical knowledge.
- Experience using drills, riveters, grinders, cutting tools and measuring equipment.
- Previous work with vans or light commercial vehicles.
- Relevant automotive, engineering or electrical qualification.
