We’re Breakthrough Communications and we’re passionate about helping organisations that serve the public feel confident, capable and supported.
A significant part of our work involves supporting parish and town councils across the country. We help them communicate clearly, manage information responsibly and navigate complex information compliance challenges without unnecessary stress or confusion. Our approach is practical, proportionate and grounded in a genuine understanding of how councils work.
Our information governance work includes delivering training, providing practical advice and creating helpful resources covering data protection, Freedom of Information and Environmental Information Regulations compliance.
We are now looking to expand our services - and that's where you come in! We're now looking to recruit an Information Governance Advisor who shares our approach. You will provide councils with clear, practical and calm advice on FOI, EIR and data protection. You will help them resolve immediate issues while building their confidence and capability to manage future challenges.
You will also work proactively with our customers to embed good information governance practices. This will include supporting them with data mapping, risk assessments and the development of policies and other essential documents.
This is a varied and interesting role for a people person who can build positive relationships with customers and make complex requirements easier to understand. You will
- Advise parish and town councils on matters relating to FOI, EIR, UK GDPR, DPA 2018 and DUAA 2025.
- Help councils handle FOI requests, EIR requests, SARs and data breaches as well as providing advice and guidance on data mapping, DPIAs and other practical compliance questions.
- Translate their legal duties with clarity and practicality, providing useful guidance for clerks, officers and councillors.
- Create templates, checklists, toolkits, guidance notes and e-learning content.
- Support data protection review work, including data maps, DPIAs, privacy notices and policy refreshes.
- Draft clear client-ready advice, reports and practical recommendations.
- Spot common risks across councils and turn them into better resources.
- Keep internal resources up to date as law, ICO guidance and council practice changes.
- Escalate complex or high-risk matters early.
- Support training or webinars where experience allows.
You will primarily work from home, with several days each year spent at our head office in Littlehampton, West Sussex. We will also require occasional travel to council offices across agreed parts of the country.
