We are growing our tax advisory team and recruiting for a Senior Tax Associate or Tax Manager to be based in our Liverpool office. This is a pure advisory role, 100% focused on tax advice for owner managed businesses (OMBs) and high net worth individuals (HNWIs). There is no routine compliance in the role; that sits with our accounting services teams.
We are open on level. We will shape the role, Senior Associate or Manager, and the package around the right person, whether you are already qualified or part-qualified and building towards it. What matters is strong technical ability, a genuine interest in advisory work, and the drive to develop.
-
Deliver tax advisory engagements for OMBs and HNWIs end to end, from scoping and research, through working papers, to a clear final report, covering areas such as company reorganisations, share schemes, holding company structures, inheritance tax and succession, capital gains and transactions.
-
Get real client exposure from the start, you will have the freedom to liaise directly with clients and project manage your own engagements, with support from a senior colleague whenever you need it.
-
Work up your deliverables to a high draft-final standard with minimal review points, and research and correctly apply UK tax legislation, HMRC guidance and case law.
-
Analyse the tax implications within each engagement, identify the risks and the opportunities, and set them out clearly for discussion with the client.
-
Build and manage client relationships day to day, be responsive, and contribute to meetings with clients, solicitors and other stakeholders.
-
Spot further opportunities across the client base and refer them to the director and business development team.
-
At Manager level: take ownership of engagements from scoping to final deliverable, on budget and to deadline with limited director input; review the work of junior colleagues and develop them through it; and scope work and prepare fee proposals with BD support.
-
Keep our practice management system (Glide) up to date for your work, and manage WIP, recoverability and billing on your portfolio.
-
CTA and/or ACA/ACCA qualified, or part-qualified with a strong exam record and clear progress towards qualification.
-
Experience advising owner managed businesses would be ideal. We will equally consider candidates with a strong corporate tax background who are keen to move into advisory work and broaden into OMB and HNW areas.
-
A solid grounding in UK tax advisory for OMBs and/or HNWIs, you don't need every area, but you should be strong in some of: reorganisations and restructuring, share schemes and employee incentives, IHT and estate planning, CGT, property, and residence and domicile.
-
Confident technical research and the ability to apply legislation, HMRC guidance and case law correctly.
-
Clear report-writing and well-organised working papers, and the ability to explain complex points plainly to clients and colleagues.
-
Able to manage your own workflow and engagements with limited supervision.
-
Desirable: experience reviewing and developing junior team members; experience scoping work and preparing fee proposals; and exposure to advising in specific sectors.
-
A genuinely advisory-focused role in a growing tax team, with direct exposure to complex OMB and HNW work and to the partners.
-
Clear progression, the role sits on a defined career ladder from Trainee through to Director, with grade expectations set out in advance.
-
Study support for part-qualified candidates working towards CTA / ACA / ACCA.
-
Investment in technology, including AI tools to take the routine out of research and drafting so you can focus on the advisory work.
-
Salary and benefits: competitive, dependent on level and experience
