Overview
IMH are seeking a dedicated Plant Operative to join our manufacturing team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for supporting the daily operations of our plant, ensuring that production processes run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. The purpose of the Waste Transfer Station Plant Operative is to oversee the acceptance of waste into a Recycling and Household Waste Site (RHWS) or Waste Transfer Station (WTS), ensuring appropriate segregation and sorting of waste and compacting and bulking waste for onward transport to treatment destinations.
The role regularly involves operating plant such as backhoe loaders, loading shovels, telehandlers and forklift trucks. The Waste Transfer Station Plant Operative is also responsible for transporting waste, equipment and consumables in vans.
Duties
- Carry out duties individually or as part of a team to maximise recycling at an RHWS or WTS.
- Assist with and help maximise and improve the segregation of recyclable materials on site, including picking and sorting waste from trade customers.
- Operate the site's backhoe loader, loading shovel, telehandler, forklift truck and any other heavy plant as reasonably directed by a Supervisor or Waste Operations Officer.
- Undertake cleaning and oversee maintenance of all site mobile plant.
- Undertake inspections in line with agreed timescales.
- Ensure the site's opening and closing times are adhered to at all times in accordance with the relevant site permit and Council operating procedures.
- Complete all regulatory and statutory paperwork as advised by the line manager within the required timescales.
- Ensure all waste entering the site is verified as being in accordance with the relevant site permit.
- Comply with all Council policies and procedures, including safe working procedures.
- Assist with traffic management on site, including vehicles entering and exiting the site when moving or exchanging waste containers.
- Carry out duties in a professional manner.
- Undertake any other duties reasonably requested within the scope of the role, including assuming responsibility for a Supervisor when absent and acting as a responsible key holder.
- Cooperate with the Council and other employees to comply with health and safety legislation and the Council's Health and Safety Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure that, within areas of responsibility, the Council complies fully with its legal duties regarding the health, safety and welfare of employees and other people who may be affected by actions or omissions.
- Protect and manage information securely and report breaches or suspected information security breaches in line with Council policies.
- Drive a box van or similar vehicle and transport waste, equipment and consumables between agreed locations.
- Act as and provide cover for Recycling Operatives.
- Report and ensure others report all incidents on site in accordance with Council policies and procedures.
Skills
- The nature of the work involves working outside normal working hours, including bank holidays, weekends and out-of-hours working or cover.
- The role involves working at different locations across the County.
- The jobholder may be required to attend training courses, conferences, seminars or other meetings as required by their training needs and the needs of the service.
- Expenses will be paid in accordance with the Local Conditions of Service.
- The jobholder must wear appropriate uniform and personal protective equipment issued to them, including a Body Worn Camera, subject to any agreed reasonable adjustments.
- The jobholder will act as a responsible key holder and open and close sites in accordance with agreed documented processes and procedures.
- This is a safety-critical role and is subject to random substance testing under the Council's substance misuse policy.
Essential
- Basic level of literacy / good standard of education, including English and Mathematics at GCSE level or equivalent.
- Loading Shovel / Telehandler Ticket, or willingness to work towards this within a reasonable timeframe of three months.
- Forklift Truck Licence, or willingness to work towards this within a reasonable timeframe of three months.
- WAMITAB CoTC Level 4 or above, or willingness to work towards this as necessary.
- Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work – First Response or equivalent, or willingness to work towards this as necessary.
- Basic knowledge of Waste Operations, including HWRC and WTS.
- Basic knowledge of waste disposal and treatment practices.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role.
- Experience operating waste transfer heavy plant, such as a telehandler and/or loading shovel.
