Role purpose
This is a hands-on, working-supervisor role at the heart of Paw Paddock's grounds and estate upkeep. You will take ownership of day-to-day site standards, plan and deliver the routine maintenance calendar, lead a junior groundskeeper, and independently deliver small capital projects – drainage, pathways, and similar groundworks – using the company's existing plant and machinery. The aim is to bring work currently carried out by multiple subcontractors in-house, raise the overall standard of the estate, and give the business a single point of accountability for grounds quality.
Key responsibilities
Planning and supervision
- Schedule and coordinate the routine maintenance calendar across all paddocks – mowing rotation, hedge cutting, spraying, and bin collection.
- Supervise and direct the junior groundskeeper's day-to-day work, providing training and oversight.
- Manage materials, consumables and small tools – ordering, stock control and supplier relationships.
- Report progress, issues and priorities to the Owner/Director on a regular basis, and flag anything requiring guidance before starting unfamiliar or higher-risk work.
Capital and project work
- Independently deliver small-to-medium groundworks projects with guidance from the Owner/Director – drainage installation and repair, pathway renewal, entrance and access repairs.
- Operate the company digger and Avant safely and competently for both routine and project work.
- Identify and resolve small site issues proactively (drainage, path edges, fencing, signage) before they become larger, costlier jobs.
Hands-on grounds work
- Carry out and support mowing across the paddock rotation, particularly during peak season.
- Lead hedge cutting, screening and spraying work (in-house PA1/PA6a certification provided), working alongside the junior groundskeeper.
- Maintain company vehicles, mower, digger and Avant in good working order – routine checks, basic maintenance, and liaising with servicing providers.
Person specification
Essential
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
- Proven experience of grounds maintenance, groundworks, agriculture, or a related outdoor/estate role.
- Some exposure to small construction or groundworks tasks (drainage, paths, access repairs), even if gained as part of a team rather than leading the work solo.
- Comfortable supervising and directing another team member.
- Well organised, with the ability to plan and prioritise a varied workload across the week and across seasons.
- Physically fit and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to train towards a digger/excavator ticket (CPCS or NPORS) if not already held.
Desirable
- A recognised digger/excavator ticket (CPCS or NPORS), or demonstrable equivalent plant experience – a strong advantage but not required from day one; training will be provided if not already held.
- Experience delivering small construction or groundworks projects independently or with minimal supervision.
- PA1/PA6a certification for pesticide/herbicide application (training will be provided if not already held).
- Chainsaw or hedge-cutting qualifications.
- First Aid at Work certificate.
- Experience managing supplier relationships or small budgets.
What we offer
- The opportunity to shape and lead a growing in-house grounds function, with real autonomy over how work is planned and delivered.
- Full training support for any certifications not already held (digger ticket, spraying, first aid).
- Use of well-maintained company plant and vehicles – vans, digger, mower, and Avant.
- A varied role spanning hands-on grounds work, project delivery, and team leadership.
