The job in one line
We're looking for an experienced barista to join our Brighton Marina team, 20 to 30 hours a week, working most weekends.
Who we are
The Laughing Dog is an independent, family run cafe. We've been trading for over 15 years and we have two sites, Brighton Marina and Worthing. We serve proper coffee, big breakfasts, our (fairly famous) pancakes, and we're the sort of place where families with small children are genuinely welcome rather than tolerated. It's busy, it's friendly, and the team is the reason people come back.
What you'll be doing
- Making consistently good coffee through a busy service, espresso, milk and all
- Serving customers on the till and on the floor, taking orders and running food
- Keeping the bar clean, stocked and running smoothly, including cleandown and calibration
- Working closely with the kitchen so orders land quickly and correctly
- Opening or closing the cafe, depending on your shift
- Looking after regulars, remembering their order, and making new people feel like regulars
Hours
- 20 to 30 hours a week, across roughly 3 to 4 shifts
- You will be working almost every weekend. We're upfront about that, weekends are our busiest trade and this role exists to cover them
- Daytime hours only. No late nights, no split shifts
- Rota given in advance
- Weekend heavy and daytime only, so it works well around studies, another part time job or family commitments
What we're looking for
- Previous barista experience in a busy cafe or coffee shop. You should be comfortable on an espresso machine from day one
- Speed and consistency when it gets busy, we do real volume at weekends
- A warm, genuinely friendly manner with customers, including families and children
- Someone reliable who turns up on time and doesn't leave the team short
- Happy to muck in with whatever the shift needs, this is a small team and everyone does a bit of everything
- Food hygiene certificate is a bonus, not essential, we'll sort it
What you get
- £12.90 per hour, paid weekly
- Free food and drinks on shift, plus staff discount when you're not working
- Daytime hours, so you get your evenings back
- Workplace pension and paid holiday
- Hours that fit around study or other commitments, we're used to working around term time and exams
- A team that actually likes each other, and a manager who'll back you up
How to apply
Either through indeed or send a short message telling us where you've made coffee before and when you can work, along with your CV, to [email protected]. Or drop in and hand it to a member of the team, we'd rather meet you anyway!
