Healthcare Together is looking for reliable, professional self-employed drivers to transport members of our care team to and from care homes across Devon and Cornwall.
Drivers use their own vehicles and usually collect between one and four carers before taking them to one or two care homes. Drivers with suitable larger vehicles may carry additional passengers.
Working Times
The work generally consists of split shifts.
Each morning or evening duty usually involves between two and three and a half hours of driving.
- Morning duties take place sometime between 5:30am and 10:00am.
- Evening duties take place sometime between 5:30pm and 10:00pm.
Exact start and finish times, mileage and destinations will depend on the route allocated.
Drivers are paid from the approved time they leave home until the duty is completed.
Payment
- £13.50 for each approved working hour
- 30p per approved mile towards fuel, servicing and vehicle wear
- £1 for each carer carried above the first, with no upper limit
- Approved bridge crossings reimbursed at £1.50 per crossing
Responsibilities
- Collect carers punctually from their agreed addresses
- Transport carers safely to their assigned care homes and complete return journeys after their shifts
- Communicate promptly about delays, problems or route changes
- Keep an accurate log of every journey, including start and finish times, mileage, destinations and passenger numbers
- Keep the vehicle clean, tidy and presentable for staff passengers
- Ensure the vehicle remains safe, roadworthy and properly maintained
- Maintain a valid, up-to-date MOT certificate where legally required
- Promptly address faults that could affect passenger safety or comfort
- Maintain strict confidentiality when handling carers’ home addresses, care-home details, routes and other work-related information
- Use confidential information only to complete assigned journeys and never share it with anyone who is not authorised to receive it
Journey records will be reviewed against expected Google Maps routes and travel times to confirm that submitted mileage and working hours are reasonable.
Requirements
- A full, valid UK driving licence
- Your own reliable and suitably maintained vehicle
- Class 1 business-use motor insurance, or a willingness to obtain it before starting
- Good timekeeping and communication skills
- The ability to work early mornings, evenings and split shifts
- A safe, considerate and professional driving manner
- A willingness to work on a self-employed basis
- The ability to submit complete and accurate journey records
Healthcare Together will process a basic DBS check for the successful applicant before they start the role.
This role may suit someone who enjoys driving, works well independently and is comfortable with early starts and evening duties.
