Job Summary
We are seeking a practical, customer-focused leadership role supporting the smooth daily running of a busy café.
Hours: 4 to 5 days a week, including 2 out of 4 weekends. Normal hours between 8.30am and 5.00pm.
Role Summary:-
The Café Supervisor is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operation of the café, ensuring excellent customer service, high standards of food presentation, and full compliance with food hygiene, health and safety, and cash-handling procedures. The role is hands-on and requires the postholder to lead by example, supervise team members during shifts, maintain a welcoming environment, and support the Café Manager with stock control, training, and operational standards
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the smooth running of daily café operations, including opening, service, and closing procedures.
- Provide friendly, professional and efficient customer service, resolving customer queries or complaints calmly and appropriately.
- Supervise, motivate and support café team members during shifts, ensuring tasks are clearly allocated and completed to standard.
- Prepare and serve food and beverages in line with menu specifications, presentation standards and allergen requirements.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene and organisation across the café, kitchen, counter, seating and storage areas.
- Ensure food safety procedures are followed, including temperature checks, stock rotation, allergen awareness, cleaning records and waste monitoring.
- Monitor stock levels, receive deliveries, rotate stock correctly and support ordering to minimise shortages and waste.
- Handle cash, card transactions and end-of-day reconciliation in line with company procedures.
- Support staff training, onboarding and ongoing coaching in customer service, food handling, barista skills and compliance procedures.
- Assist with rota planning, shift cover and communication between the café team and management.
- Support seasonal promotions, menu changes, events or catering requirements as needed
- Report maintenance issues, incidents, stock concerns, customer feedback and operational risks to the Café Manager promptly.
Experience & Skills
Essential
- Previous experience in a café, hospitality, catering, retail or customer-facing food service environment.
- Strong customer service skills and a warm, approachable manner.
- Ability to supervise a small team and lead by example during busy service periods.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and maintain standards under pressure.
- Understanding of food hygiene, health and safety, allergen awareness and safe working practices.
- Confident handling cash, card payments and basic daily records.
- Reliable, flexible and willing to work weekends, bank holidays or occasional evenings where required.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work positively with colleagues, customers and suppliers.
Desirable
- Food Hygiene Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
- Barista experience or confidence using commercial coffee equipment.
- Experience with stock control, ordering, rota support or training new team members.
- First aid, fire marshal or other relevant workplace training.
- Experience supporting events, catering functions or seasonal promotions.
- Proven experience in restaurant or hospitality environments, preferably with supervisory or team management responsibilities.
