Overview
This role is responsible for managing the day-to-day delivery of civil engineering, drainage, utilities and highway works on live construction sites. The Site Manager will coordinate labour, plant, materials and subcontractors while ensuring works are completed safely, to the required quality standards, on programme and within budget. The position requires strong technical knowledge of excavations, drainage, temporary works and street works, together with effective client communication, record keeping and overall site leadership.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, manage and monitor day-to-day site activities.
- Manage civil engineering works including drainage, pipework, ducting, chambers, excavations, reinforced concrete, road construction and reinstatement.
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials, subcontractors and deliveries.
- Produce and manage short-term programmes, resource plans and lookaheads.
- Review drawings, specifications, and Works Authorisations, raising RFIs where information is incomplete or conflicting.
- Ensure works are completed in accordance with approved RAMS, permits, inspection plans and client procedures.
- Manage permits to dig, service avoidance, trial holes, and safe excavation practices.
- Coordinate temporary works including excavation support, trench boxes, shoring, formwork, access arrangements and temporary traffic management.
- Manage highway and street works, including signing, lighting, guarding, excavation and reinstatement activities.
- Liaise with the client, Principal Contractor and other stakeholders.
- Maintain access to properties and operational facilities where required.
- Manage quality inspections, material records, test results, red-line drawings and as-built information.
- Maintain accurate site diaries, progress records, photographs, labour returns and records of delays or variations.
- Monitor productivity, costs and programme performance.
- Lead site inductions, daily briefings, toolbox talks and workforce engagement.
- Ensure environmental controls are implemented, including waste, pollution, silt, noise and vegetation management.
- Complete handover, snagging and close-out documentation.
Essential experience and abilities
- Demonstrable experience managing a broad range of civil engineering, drainage, utilities or highway works.
- Practical experience of drainage installation, pipe laying, manholes, chambers and associated earthworks.
- Experience managing excavations, temporary works, groundwater and underground services.
- Good working knowledge of NRSWA, street-works requirements and temporary traffic management.
- Experience working from drawings, specifications, programmes, RAMS and inspection plans.
- Ability to manage subcontractors, direct labour, plant and material resources.
- Strong understanding of construction health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
- Commercial awareness, including the identification and recording of changes, delays and additional works.
- Confident client-facing communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel & experience using digital site-recording systems would be beneficial.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Willingness to travel between projects and work on live operational sites.
Essential qualifications
- Valid SMSTS certificate.
- Appropriate CSCS (Black) Manager card.
- Suitable qualification or demonstrable competence in construction site management.
- First Aid at Work.
- Current NRSWA/SWQR Supervisor accreditation.
- Suitable qualification or demonstrable competence in construction site management.
Pay: £50,000.00-£55,000.00 per year
