Multi skilled fitter (Engineer) – Port of Boston
Working within the Ports Engineering department, out on site and in the workshop, reporting to the Engineering Manager.
The role & main duties
- Repairing, maintaining & servicing all types of plant, machinery & equipment including forklifts, tractor unit / shunters, cranes
- Work on your own and with colleagues to find and diagnose faults using hand tools or computers
- Advise the Engineering Manager of repairs required to plant, machinery & equipment including costs where applicable
- Highlight any problematic plant and equipment that is continually problematic and may be better suited to replacement rather than repairing
- Maintain records of each machine or vehicle including any work performed
- Operate & use all tools and machinery required in a safe and competent manner and to follow the relevant safe systems of work and control measures within risk assessments
- Test vehicles to check if repairs are required or if repairs have been effective
- Actively identify any changes in working practice that could lead to safety and/or efficiency improvements
This role may be suitable for: Agricultural Engineer, Forklift Engineer, Mechanical Fitter
Required
- 5 years’ experience working with plant & equipment in particular forklifts
- Experience in fault finding on a variety of plant, equipment and vehicles
- Ability to adapt and learn new skills
- Mechanical Engineering and/or Electrical Engineering Qualification
- Full UK driving license
- Positive mindset and a ‘can-do’ attitude
- Proficient in use of IT equipment e.g. smartphone
Preferred
- 3a & 3b Working Platforms (Cherry Picker / MEWP)
- Experience with maintenance on heavy plant and machinery e.g. 360 material handlers and/or cranes
Working hours
- Standard working hours Monday to Friday 40 hours (0700 to 1530 hrs with a 30 minute lunch)
- Paid tea break in morning
- Requirement to be part of an on call rota (currently 1 in every 4 weeks), providing emergency breakdown cover. This is generally only 1 or 2 times during an ‘on-call’ week.

- Regular overtime available after 40 hours at 1.5x basic rate and overtime paid for attending site out of hours when ‘on call’
