About the role
Join Balfour Beatty’s Regional Civils team as a Site Engineer and play a vital role in delivering a range of highways and infrastructure projects across Stockton-on-Tees and the wider North East. Working alongside experienced engineering and construction professionals, you’ll help ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards of quality, contributing to projects that improve local transport networks and create lasting benefits for communities.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated Site Engineer looking to develop their career on complex civil engineering schemes. You'll be involved in all aspects of site delivery, from setting out and quality control through to planning, safety, and technical problem-solving, gaining exposure to major infrastructure projects while working for one of the UK's leading construction and infrastructure businesses. What you'll be doing
- Supporting the Senior Project Team in implementing the engineering strategy and delivery framework across a range of highways and infrastructure projects.
- Managing materials, plant, and labour resources to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with project budgets.
- Undertaking setting out for highways, earthworks, drainage, and structures to the required specifications and tolerances.
- Providing technical support to delivery teams, checking the work of others, and helping to resolve engineering challenges on site.
- Ensuring design information, quality procedures, and engineering standards are effectively communicated and implemented across the project.
- Supporting project assurance activities through site audits, inspections, and regular reviews, identifying best practice and opportunities for improvement.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers to support the successful delivery of technical solutions.
- Ensuring engineering activities are planned and managed effectively from design through to construction and handover, taking account of site constraints, customer requirements, and statutory regulations.
- Assisting with procurement and material control processes, including maintaining accurate records and supporting project reporting.
- Carrying out quality inspections, completing check sheets, and maintaining records to demonstrate compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
- Monitoring progress and productivity on site, contributing to weekly and monthly performance reports for project and senior management teams.
- Providing valuable project feedback and lessons learned to support continuous improvement and future project planning.
- Utilising digital engineering and construction technologies to improve project delivery and efficiency.

Who we're looking for
- Previous experience in a Site Engineer, Section Engineer, or similar role within highways, civil engineering, or major infrastructure projects.
- Strong technical engineering knowledge, with the ability to apply industry best practices to the delivery of complex construction projects.
- Up-to-date understanding of engineering standards, specifications, and construction methodologies.
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline, with an HNC/HND or equivalent engineering qualification also considered.
- Professional membership or progress towards a recognised institution such as ICE is desirable.
- Valid CSCS card and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and quality on site.
- Excellent attention to detail, with the confidence to identify risks, escalate issues, and drive corrective actions when required.
- Experience supporting or leading teams on construction projects, with the ability to provide technical guidance and contribute to project success.
- Strong understanding of technical challenges and emerging trends within the highways and infrastructure sector.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with project teams, clients, consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- A proactive, customer-focused approach, with the flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and site conditions.
- Passion for continuous improvement, innovation, and engineering excellence, with a desire to embrace new technologies and ways of working.
- Understanding of BIM processes and experience using or interpreting BIM models, with the ability to extract and utilise project information where required.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and perform effectively in a fast-paced project environment.
