Location: Blantyre, Glasgow, with travel throughout Glasgow and the Central Belt
Employment: Part-Time – approximately 2–3 days per week initially
Working Pattern: Flexible
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
The Role
We are looking for an experienced, practical and proactive Health & Safety Coordinator to support our existing Health & Safety function and operational management team.
This is a hands-on, site-focused role and would suit someone with good practical experience of construction, highways, civil engineering, utilities or a similar operational environment.
The position is initially envisaged as a part-time role of approximately 2–3 days per week, with flexibility around working arrangements. It could particularly suit an experienced safety professional who is looking to reduce their working hours while continuing to use their industry knowledge and experience.
The role will support two main areas of our business:
· Street furniture and signage installation – including works on new-build developments, installation of street signs, lighting columns/poles and associated electrical activities.
· Road marking operations – including road marking and associated activities undertaken on live roads and carriageways.
Based in our Blantyre office, the successful candidate will work closely with our existing Health & Safety Advisor and Directors, Management and operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
The Health & Safety Coordinator will:
· Review proposed projects and work activities at the planning and pre-start stage, helping identify significant health and safety risks and appropriate controls.
· Assist with the preparation, review and implementation of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
· Ensure RAMS reflect the actual work being undertaken and site-specific conditions.
· Carry out regular site safety inspections and audits throughout Glasgow and the Central Belt.
· Monitor compliance with RAMS and agreed safe systems of work.
· Attend pre-start, planning and client meetings to discuss health and safety arrangements where needed.
· Liaise with clients, Principal Contractors, contractors, managers and supervisors on operational safety matters.
· Monitor safety arrangements for road marking and other activities on or adjacent to live carriageways.
· Monitor temporary traffic management arrangements and the protection of employees and members of the public.
· Provide support with safety arrangements for street furniture, signage, lighting column/pole and associated electrical activities.
· Monitor the condition and inspection arrangements for company vehicles, plant, machinery and work equipment.
· Check that required vehicle, plant and equipment inspections are being completed and recorded.
· Assist with accident, incident and near-miss investigations where required.
· Monitor actions arising from audits, inspections and investigations and help ensure they are closed out.
· Assist with monitoring employee training, competency and certification requirements.
· Help organise appropriate training and refresher training when required.
· Deliver or assist with toolbox talks and safety briefings.
· Support compliance with relevant requirements including CDM, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, Electricity at Work, Working at Height and workplace transport requirements, where applicable.
· Work alongside the existing Health & Safety Advisor to help maintain and continually improve health and safety standards across the business.
About You
For this position, practical industry experience is particularly important.
Ideally, you will have:
· Experience within construction, highways, civil engineering, utilities or a similar operational environment.
· A recognised health and safety qualification such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate or equivalent.
· Good practical knowledge of UK health and safety requirements.
· Knowledge and understanding of CDM 2015.
· Experience preparing or reviewing RAMS.
· Experience carrying out site inspections and audits.
· An understanding of plant, vehicles and work equipment.
· The ability to identify potential safety issues during the planning stage, rather than simply identifying problems once work has started.
· Confidence communicating with site operatives, supervisors, managers, clients and Principal Contractors.
· A practical and proportionate approach to health and safety.
· Good organisational and basic IT/report-writing skills.
· A full UK driving licence.
Experience of highways, road marking, temporary traffic management, street furniture, street lighting or electrical works would be particularly advantageous.
Flexible Working
We recognise that someone with considerable industry experience may not necessarily be looking for another full-time position.
We are therefore open to discussing flexible working arrangements, with the role initially expected to involve approximately 2–3 days per week.
The position could suit an experienced individual who has stepped back from full-time employment but would like to remain professionally active and use their knowledge to support our operational teams.
There may be scope for the role and working hours to develop in the future.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is comfortable being out on site and involved with the work, rather than operating solely from an office.
The right person will be able to look at a proposed job, understand how it is going to be carried out, identify potential safety issues, contribute to the RAMS and then visit the site to make sure the agreed arrangements are being followed.
They will work alongside our existing Health & Safety Advisor and operational management team to help ensure that work is properly planned, appropriately risk assessed and safely delivered.
Pay: £25,420.00-£40,000.00 per year
Work Location: In person
