Job Summary
The Gateway Café is seeking a reliable, enthusiastic, and hardworking Commis Chef to join our friendly kitchen team. The successful candidate will assist with the preparation and cooking of fresh food, maintain high standards of cleanliness and food safety, and support the day-to-day running of the café kitchen. Duties
- Prepare ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and daily café menu items under the guidance of the Head Chef or Kitchen Supervisor.
- Assist with cooking and presenting food to the café's quality standards.
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene, safety, and cleanliness in accordance with Food Safety regulations.
- Ensure all food is stored, labelled, and rotated correctly following stock control procedures.
- Help with receiving deliveries and organising kitchen stock and supplies.
- Keep workstations, kitchen equipment, and utensils clean and sanitised throughout each shift.
- Support the kitchen team during busy service periods to ensure food is prepared and served efficiently.
- Assist with preparing sandwiches, salads, baked items, soups, and other café menu offerings.
- Follow recipes and portion controls to minimise waste and maintain consistency.
- Work collaboratively with front-of-house staff to ensure excellent customer service.
- Carry out opening and closing kitchen duties as required.
- Comply with all health and safety policies and contribute to maintaining a safe working environment.
Requirements
- Previous experience working in a kitchen, café, or catering environment is desirable but not essential.
- A basic understanding of food hygiene and food safety practices.
- Food Hygiene Level 2 Certificate is desirable (or willingness to obtain one).
- Ability to work efficiently in a busy, fast-paced environment.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and a passion for preparing quality food.
- Ability to work well as part of a team and communicate effectively with colleagues.
- Flexibility to work weekdays, weekends, and occasional special events as required.
- A commitment to delivering excellent food quality and customer service.
