The role
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Programme Manager to lead the management of the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Evaluation and Behavioural Science (HPRU EBS), hosted by the University of Bristol. The HPRU EBS is a collaborative partnership between University of Bristol, UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), University of Cambridge and University of the West of England to deliver high-quality research that supports the protection of public health.
This role will work closely with academics, researchers, professional services staff and external stakeholders to support the delivery and growth of an NIHR-funded infrastructure. The postholder will manage and support the successful development, delivery and growth of multidisciplinary research across the HPRU EBS’s five work themes.
Part-time will be considered at a minimum of 0.5 FTE, especially if combined with other posts.
Hybrid working is available - flexible, to be agreed with the line manager.
What will you be doing?
The postholder will:
Coordinate and support the delivery of HPRU EBS research activities, work themes and collaborative projects.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with NIHR, UKHSA, University colleagues, partner organisations, and external stakeholders
Monitor research progress, outputs, impact and reporting requirements, ensuring compliance with funder, governance and regulatory requirements.
Contribute to, and support development of, research outputs arising from HPRU activities.
Support the development of new research opportunities, partnerships, funding applications and research collaborations.
Contribute to initiatives that enhance knowledge mobilisation, public involvement, research inclusion, and academic career development within the unit
Manage key meetings, advisory groups and network-wide activities, including knowledge mobilisation and public involvement initiatives.
Lead the development and submission of quarterly and annual funding reports to funders and stakeholders
You should apply if
you have:
Significant experience of complex programme or projects management.
Strong understanding of applied health, public health, behavioural science, or related research environments.
Experience of research governance, ethics, reporting, and regulatory compliance.
Experience of resource and budget management within externally funded research programmes
Ability to lead, coordinate, motivate, and develop multidisciplinary teams.

Contract type: Fixed term for 12 months or the earlier return of the postholder from maternity leave (ideally 01/10/2026-30/09/2027)
Work pattern: Full time/1 FTE (part-time will be considered at minimum 0.5 FTE)
Grade: Grade K / Pathway 2
Salary: £51,753 to £58,225 per annum (pro rata if part-time)
School/Unit: Bristol Medical School
Shift pattern: 35 hours per week
