Overview
This Children's Counsellor role is an inspiring opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children and adolescents aged 4–19. You’ll be supporting children as they navigate challenges such as Neurodivergence, anxiety, trauma, behavioural difficulties, family changes and the pressures of growing up. Working both in an alternative provision and primary school setting, you’ll create a safe, warm, and non‑judgemental space where young people feel truly heard and supported.
As a Children's Counsellor, you’ll assess individual needs and deliver creative, age‑appropriate therapeutic interventions, drawing on a range of approaches to tailor support to each child or young person. You’ll collaborate with families, carers, and other professionals to ensure every young person receives the holistic support they deserve, all while upholding strong safeguarding and professional boundaries.
You’ll also play a key role in maintaining accurate records, engaging in reflective supervision, and working in line with ethical and professional standards. This is a role for someone with empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for helping children and young people grow, heal, and thrive.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high quality one to one counselling to children and young people (4-19) including those with learning difficulties and/or additional needs.
- Provide creative and age-appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Promote emotional wellbeing and healthy coping strategies.
- Work in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions and the policies of the therapy centre.
- Communicate effectively with referral sources, parents/carers (where appropriate), and other professionals to ensure coordinated support.
- Report any safeguarding concerns in line with Kalmer policy.
- Complete accurate, timely session notes, assessments, reports, and any required documentation to support monitoring and evaluation.
- Provide information, guidance, and professional insight to multi‑agency partners regarding the centre’s therapeutic services.
- Attend monthly supervision in line with BACP guidelines.
- Responsible for own Continuous Professional Development (CPD) meeting the BACP guidelines of a minimum of 30 hours annually.
- Actively participate and attend annual review meetings to further professional development.
- Support the ongoing development of the service, contributing ideas and feedback to enhance provision.
- Contribute to the smooth running of the therapy centre and collaborate with the wider staff team.
- Undertake any additional duties reasonably required to ensure the effective delivery of the service.

- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to connect therapeutically with children, young people, and their families.
- Empathy, patience, and active listening skills essential for building trust and rapport with clients.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of client information in line with legal, ethical, and organisational guidelines.
- Strong administrative skills for maintaining electronic records securely and efficiently.
- Effective time management and organisational skills to manage caseloads while maintaining accurate documentation
Essential
- A recognised counselling qualification at diploma level or above.
- Experience providing therapeutic support to primary school aged children either paid or voluntary.
- BACP or equivalent membership.
- A genuine passion for working with children, young people, and individuals with learning difficulties or additional needs.
- Strong communication and active listening skills.
- Patience, empathy, and sensitivity.
- A mature, reflective, and non‑judgemental approach to practice.
- Understanding of the key issues affecting children and young people’s emotional wellbeing.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other agencies and professionals to support positive outcomes.
- A current enhanced DBS check.
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Pay: £28,275.00-£34,125.00 per year
