Young Carer Practitioner, Bradford District
Location: Bradford District
Office base: Shipley
Responsible to: Service Manager
Hours: 24 hours per week
Starting Salary: £17,513.51

As a Young Carer Practitioner, you will support the social, emotional and educational wellbeing of young carers across Bradford District through a combination of one-to-one support and group/activity-based work.
Central to this role is embedding a whole family approach. You will recognise the young carer as part of a wider family system, work proactively with parents, siblings and wider family members, identify additional support needs, and collaborate with colleagues and partner agencies to ensure coordinated, family-centred support.
The post requires flexibility, including some early evening work and participation in activities during school holidays.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the needs of young carers within the context of their family circumstances.
- Work with the whole family to identify barriers, challenges and unmet needs.
- Provide one-to-one information, advice, mentoring and emotional support.
- Develop family-focused support plans that reduce inappropriate caring responsibilities.
- Plan and deliver age-appropriate group activities and events.
- Monitor and review young carers’ needs, including changes within the family.
- Work collaboratively with statutory, voluntary and community organisations.
- Make appropriate referrals and signpost families to additional services.
- Maintain accurate and confidential case records.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and respond appropriately to concerns.
- Seek feedback from young carers and families to inform service improvement.
- Act as an ambassador for Carers’ Resource at all times.
Person Specification – Experience
- Experience supporting children and young people on an individual basis.
- Experience facilitating group work.
- Experience working in a variety of settings with children, young people and families.
- Experience or understanding of whole family or family-centred approaches.
Person Specification – Skills & Abilities
- Ability to manage a complex and varied workload.
- Skilled facilitator, communicator and negotiator.
- Ability to engage sensitively with families experiencing challenge.
- Organised and systematic approach with attention to detail.
- Ability to produce clear, accurate written records and reports.
- Self-motivated and able to prioritise tasks.
- Confident in using technology to communicate with young people.
Person Specification – Knowledge
- Good general education.
- IT literate – competent user of Word and email.
- Understanding of social media use by young people.
- Understanding of young carers’ needs and current issues.
- Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Awareness of legislation, benefits and services affecting young carers and families.
- Understanding of statutory, private and voluntary sector roles.
Other Requirements
- Commitment to confidentiality, sensitivity and a non-judgemental approach.
- Full, clean driving licence and access to own transport.
- Willingness to work regular early evenings and occasional weekends.
- Flexible approach to meet the needs of young carers and families.
