Working across our hospice site, you'll help ensure our buildings, grounds and facilities are safe, well-maintained and fully operational. From carrying out minor repairs and supporting facilities projects to preparing rooms and maintaining outdoor areas, your contribution will help create a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone who visits or works at St Peter & St James Hospice.

What you'll be doing
As a Maintenance Assistant, you'll support the day-to-day operation, maintenance and upkeep of the hospice estate. No two days will be the same, and your work will have a direct impact on the experience of patients, visitors, staff and volunteers.
Support the maintenance and upkeep of hospice facilities:

Assist with general building maintenance, repairs and minor works across the hospice estate

Carry out routine inspections of buildings and grounds, identifying and reporting defects

Undertake minor repairs and rectification work where appropriate
-
Respond promptly to maintenance requests and work orders, prioritising issues effectively

Help maintain and update the Facilities Management Helpdesk with new and completed jobs
Help maintain a safe and compliant environment:

Support health and safety compliance across the hospice site

Report hazards, incidents, defects and safety concerns to the Facilities Manager

Assist with planned preventative maintenance activities
-
Support emergency procedures and business continuity arrangements when required

Help ensure facilities, equipment and working environments remain safe and operational
Provide practical facilities support across the organisation:

Set up and prepare meeting rooms, training rooms and event spaces
-
Assist with office moves, furniture installation and equipment relocation
-
Undertake porterage and manual handling tasks safely and in line with procedures
-
Monitor maintenance stock levels and support inventory management of tools, materials and supplies

Support waste management and recycling activities across the site
Support the hospice grounds and wider estate:

Assist in maintaining external areas including pathways, car parks and grounds

Help ensure outdoor areas remain safe, tidy and accessible for all visitors

Occasionally travel to support our retail shops and warehouse where required

Carry out other reasonable duties appropriate to the role as requested by the Facilities Manager
What we're looking for

Experience within a maintenance, facilities, healthcare, hospice or similar environment

Good practical knowledge of building maintenance and repair techniques

Awareness of health and safety practices and safe systems of work

Ability to undertake manual handling tasks safely

Good communication and organisational skills

Strong practical problem-solving abilities

Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Basic IT skills and confidence updating facilities management systems

A flexible, reliable and positive approach to work

Full UK driving licence (desirable)

Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance systems and compliance requirements such as fire safety, water hygiene and health and safety (desirable)

Relevant maintenance or facilities qualifications (desirable)
