About ETM
ETM is an established civil engineering and waste management business with more than 20 years’ experience and over 200 employees. We deliver fully in-house solutions across the South West, working with local authorities and blue-chip clients.
Our operations span recycling, construction, traffic management, transport and office environments, making this a varied and influential H&S opportunity.
The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Group Health & Safety Manager to lead Health & Safety across ETM Group.
This is a senior, hands-on role with responsibility for setting and maintaining H&S standards across the business, but with a particular focus on our recycling operation.
You will take direct responsibility for Health & Safety at our recycling facility, working closely with operational managers and employees to maintain compliance, manage risk and continually improve standards. Previous experience within waste management or recycling would be highly advantageous.
Our other operations are already supported by an experienced H&S Manager. You will lead and oversee this function, providing guidance, support and assurance while ensuring appropriate standards and compliance are maintained.
You will also provide wider H&S oversight across the Group, including areas such as transport, fleet and office operations.
Building Engagement and Driving Change
Strong Health & Safety performance is about more than technical knowledge and compliance. We are looking for someone who can engage, influence and bring people with them.
You’ll work closely with managers and operational teams to build understanding and ownership of Health & Safety, helping them understand not only what needs to change, but why it matters.
You’ll be confident challenging existing practices where necessary, while recognising the realities of a busy operational environment. Your approach will be collaborative and practical, working with managers to identify workable solutions, gain buy-in and embed improvements into everyday ways of working.
Ultimately, we’re looking for someone who can influence positive change, build strong relationships and make Health & Safety something managers feel part of, rather than something that is simply imposed on them.
This is as much a people and influencing role as it is a technical H&S position.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Taking direct responsibility for H&S within our recycling operation
- Providing leadership and oversight of H&S across the Group
- Leading and supporting the H&S Manager responsible for our construction activities
- Providing H&S oversight across transport, fleet, offices and other Group functions
- Conducting and overseeing audits, inspections and compliance reviews
- Reviewing risk assessments, safe systems of work and method statements
- Leading or supporting accident, incident and near-miss investigations
- Monitoring H&S performance and ensuring improvement actions are completed
- Working with managers to improve standards and embed safe working practices
- Providing practical advice and guidance on UK H&S legislation
- Influencing behavioural and cultural change across the business
About You
You’ll be an experienced H&S professional who is comfortable working in busy, high-risk operational environments.
Ideally, you’ll have experience within waste management or recycling, although we would also welcome strong candidates from construction, civil engineering or other comparable operational environments.
Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who can communicate, influence and build credibility with people at all levels of the business.
You’ll need:
- A NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent
- Strong operational Health & Safety experience
- Experience of audits, inspections, risk assessments and incident investigations
- Confidence working with and constructively challenging operational managers
- The ability to turn H&S requirements into practical, workable solutions
- Strong communication and influencing skills
- A proactive, visible and hands-on approach to H&S
Why Join ETM?
This is an opportunity to take a genuinely influential H&S role within a diverse operational business.
You’ll have the opportunity to shape how Health & Safety is approached across the Group, directly influence our recycling operation and work with managers and teams to drive meaningful, sustainable improvements.
If you’re an experienced H&S professional who believes the best safety cultures are created by bringing people with you, we’d like to hear from you.
I think that final line is particularly useful for Indeed because it reinforces the type of H&S person you're looking for, rather than ending on qualifications alone.
