About Emmaus
Emmaus is a homelessness charity with a difference. We don’t just give people a bed for the night; we provide a home, meaningful work in our social enterprises, and a supportive community. Our "companions" (vulnerable adults rebuilding their lives) work within our enterprises to gain skills, confidence, and a stepping stone to independence.
We have just taken ownership of a catering trailer, and we need an entrepreneurial, organised, and community-minded catering professional to help us launch it from scratch.
The Opportunity: Launch & Legacy
This is not your standard head chef job. We are looking for a unique individual to manage the mobilization and initial 6-month launch of our new mobile food business.
You will have the rare opportunity to build a food enterprise from the ground up, design the menu, implement the operating systems, and—most importantly—train our companions so that they can confidently run it in the future.
Key Responsibilities:
- Business Setup: Design a simple, high-quality menu, calculate food costings/pricing, and manage initial stock procurement (with the benefit of a wholesaler right next door!).
- Compliance & Safety: Set up all food safety management systems (SFBB/HACCP) in line with Food Standards Agency regulations, ensuring the trailer is fully audit-ready for Environmental Health.
- Training & Mentorship: Patiently train, mentor, and supervise Emmaus companions on a rotating schedule, teaching them basic food preparation, hygiene practices, and customer service.
- Day-to-Day Operations: Manage the daily running of the trailer during opening hours, ensuring excellent food quality and a welcoming atmosphere.
What We Are Looking For:
- The Credentials: A Level 3 (or higher) Food Safety Supervision certificate, with a rock-solid understanding of FSA regulations and food safety paperwork.
- The Experience: A proven track record in kitchen management, mobile catering, or running a small food business. Experience with menu compilation and stock control is essential.
- The Mindset: Above all, you need empathy, patience, and excellent communication skills. You aren’t just managing a kitchen; you are mentoring people who may have faced significant life challenges. A supportive, calm, and encouraging teaching style is a must.
- The Flexibility: Ability to work 8.30AM to 2:30 PM, 5 days a week, with some Saturday as a core working day (Sundays and one weekday off).
Why Apply?
- True Work-Life Balance: Say goodbye to brutal 12-hour split shifts and late nights. Your working day finishes at 4:30 PM.
- A Rewarding Legacy: You will be able to look back after 6 months and know you built a thriving business and directly changed lives by giving vulnerable people invaluable employability skills.
How to Apply:
If you have the culinary skills to launch this business and the heart to mentor our team, we want to hear from you.
Please send your CV and a brief cover letter outlining why you are the perfect fit for this community project.
Pay: £29,250.00 per year
