A fantastic opportunity has become available for a Year 6 Academic Teaching Assistant to join a popular primary school in Lewisham, South East London, from September. This is a long-term position running until July 2027, supporting pupils across the Year 6 cohort.
The successful Year 6 Academic Teaching Assistant will work alongside class teachers to help pupils prepare for their Key Stage 2 SATs, providing targeted academic support and helping pupils achieve their full potential.
This is a varied role involving a mixture of in-class support, small-group intervention and, where required, individual support for pupils who need additional help. You will work with pupils of different abilities, helping to identify gaps in learning, reinforce key concepts and build confidence ahead of their transition to secondary school.
You could be supporting pupils with English, maths, reading and wider curriculum areas, helping them consolidate their knowledge and make strong academic progress.
This role would be particularly well suited to a graduate or aspiring primary teacher looking to gain substantial classroom experience before applying for teacher training.
Working alongside experienced Year 6 teachers, you will gain an excellent understanding of how teachers plan and deliver lessons, assess pupil progress and provide targeted intervention. You will also develop your confidence working with groups of pupils and learn how schools prepare children for the transition from primary to secondary education.
The successful Year 6 Academic Teaching Assistant will ideally have:
· A degree or relevant experience working with children
· A strong academic background, particularly in English and maths
· A genuine ambition to pursue a career in primary teaching
· Experience working with children or young people is desirable
· The confidence to support pupils individually and in small groups
· Excellent communication skills
· A patient, enthusiastic and encouraging approach
· The ability to explain concepts clearly and simply
· A proactive attitude and willingness to learn
· The ability to work collaboratively with teachers and support staff
