We are looking to recruit 2 tobacco dependency advisors for our maternity stop smoking service.
The individuals appointed to this role will be able to motivate, inspire and support those for who Tobacco dependency impacts their health and wellbeing, and that of their unborn baby and wider family.
This role will work within all areas of our maternity service, and will be supporting those who are pregnant and smoking to set a quit date and stop smoking. The person appointed will be able to identify tobacco users and will use a range of interventions to support someone to quit smoking.
The post holder will work with the Tobacco Dependence Specialist Midwife and other team members in providing individualised stop smoking support to women, pregnant people, and families in a flexible
and innovative way.
This post will contribute to tackling inequalities in health through promoting and supporting people to stop smoking. It focuses on engaging with people in communities and offering them practical support to change their behaviour to achieve their own choices and goals.
Specifically, the post holder will: Act as a Smoke Free Pregnancy champion for maternity and provide intermediate stop smoking support throughout pregnancy, using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring and Nicotine Replacement therapy.
Work independently and liaise with the specialist Tobacco Dependence Team to initiate and give stop smoking support.
Assist with administration of the smoke free pregnancy data collection and collation whilst supporting midwives to achieve the universal CO
monitoring in pregnancy targets.
Seek out opportunities to develop and implement stop smoking services in hospital and/or community antenatal clinics in areas of higher smoking rates.
Promote the general health and wellbeing of people who use the service through offering healthy lifestyle advice and support.
Work with minimal indirect supervision operating within the assessed level of competence and being accountable for all aspects of own work.

Identify and approach women who are eligible for intermediate intervention smoking cessation conversations in a variety of different settings including community locations. Follow women through their engagement with the service to the location of their care provision to integrate care.
Develop a personalised care plan of tobacco dependence treatment to include behavioural support and NRT to support the woman / pregnant person to remain smokefree, including:
1:1 meetings / telephone appointments in keeping with recommended schedule
Offering nicotine replacement therapy and ensuring continued supply
Recording quit status and conducting CO testing.
To support the Tobacco Dependency Service operationally in line with NICE and other local and national guidelines.
Provide counselling regarding the use of Nicotine Replacement Therapy, pharmacotherapy, and behavioural change support.
Manage incoming referrals to the in-house Maternity Tobacco Dependency Service
Manage outgoing referral to Local Community Tobacco Dependency Providers after pregnancy.
Communicate effectively with women/birthing people and their families when delivering tobacco dependency support in a non-judgemental and sensitive manner.
Deliver Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitoring to a high standard and engage in the data collection and collation of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum.
Ensure that the relevant equipment is provided and maintained on an agreed schedule. Report any failings of equipment or other environmental factors to the specialist midwife.
Ensure that smoking status and treatment plans are inputted correctly into the electronic patient record and this information is communicated to all appropriate services.
Support health promotional events and national campaigns such as: No Smoking Day, World No Tobacco Day and Stoptober.
Be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints and escalate any concerns or complexities to the specialist midwife.
To competently use trust IT systems to update patient records and service outcomes.
Collaborate with the other members of the Tobacco Dependency Service in order implement and update relevant policies and pathways.
Support the Smoking Cessation Lead Midwife in monitoring and reporting on relevant KPIs.
Provide expertise and advice to other staff on Tobacco Dependency policies, treatments, and pathways.
Manage own time effectively, ensuring all women under the care of the smoking cessation service have timely contact and are followed up in line with the maternity smoking cessation pathway.
