Are you an experienced payroll/bookkeeper/finance manager looking to play a pivotal role within a growing construction and development business?
Our client is seeking a proactive, detail-focused and commercially minded Bookkeeper to oversee all financial operations across two companies. This is a key leadership role within the business, working closely with the Directors and Management Team to provide insight, ensure compliance, and support long-term strategic growth.
The Role
As Bookkeeper you will:
- Lead and manage all day-to-day financial operations
- Deliver accurate, timely management accounts and financial reporting
- Maintain strong financial controls and ensure statutory compliance
- Manage cash flow, forecasting, and financial planning
- Oversee payroll (weekly & monthly), pensions and HMRC submissions
- Ensure VAT, CIS, RTI, EPS and other statutory returns are accurate and on time
- Support tender submissions and provide financial insight for project costing
- Manage credit control and supplier payments effectively
- Oversee accounting systems, process improvements and internal controls
- Support sustainability reporting, carbon accounting data and grant claims
- Work collaboratively across commercial, project, admin and management teams
This role is central to the stability and performance of the company and requires someone who takes pride in accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
What We’re Looking For
Experience & Knowledge:
- Minimum 5 years’ finance or bookkeeping experience (SME or construction preferred)
- Experience of processing payroll
- Strong understanding of UK accounting practices (VAT, CIS, PAYE, RTI, pensions)
- Experience producing management accounts and cash-flow forecasts
- Knowledge of project/job costing and commercial financial processes
- Experience with QuickBooks and online accounting systems
- Confident liaising with HMRC, external accountants and auditors

Qualifications:
- AAT Level 4 / MAAT / FIAB or similar qualification desirable
- Payroll or accounting software training advantageous
- Commitment to ongoing CPD

Success in this role will include:
- Month-end accounts delivered accurately and on time
- 100% on-time statutory submissions (VAT, CIS, RTI, EPS)
- Strong cash-flow management with no unplanned shortfalls
- Effective credit control and supplier management
- Accurate and timely payroll processing
- Clear, meaningful financial reporting to Directors
- Continuous improvement in financial systems and processes
