The Role:
We are seeking a dynamic and skilled HGV Technician/Workshop Controller to join our busy, expanding service team. In this vital role, you will be responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance, and servicing of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to ensure they operate safely and efficiently.
You will work with Field/Service Engineers as part of coordinating workshop activities, and ensuring all work complies with industry standards and safety regulations. This position offers an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong mechanical background and a passion for vehicle maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:
- Undertake daily workshop operations, ensuring timely completion of repairs and maintenance on HGVs and related equipment
- Diagnose faults using schematics, electrical experience, and mechanical knowledge to identify issues accurately
- Oversee and assist with fabrication, welding, soldering, and assembly tasks as needed to support repairs or modifications
- Utilize hand tools, power tools, and equipment repair techniques to maintain vehicle systems including brakes, engines, transmissions, and electrical components
- Conduct detailed 6 weekly inspections and MOT preparations of vehicles such as excavators and forklifts to determine repair needs and perform heavy lifting tasks safely
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and service schedules in compliance with company policies
- Provide exceptional customer service by communicating effectively with clients regarding repair status and technical issues
- Quality Standards:
- Responsible for the quality output within your respective area/department
- Ensure all work meets the required quality standards and follows the relevant specifications in line with drawings and build instructions
- Highlight any quality issues immediately and support investigation or corrective actions
- Conduct quality inspections and ensure the Job Book inspection signoffs have been completed for your area/department before moving the product on
- Work closely with the Quality department to address non-conformances and implement corrective actions
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve efficiency and enhance product quality
Communication & Liaison:
- Act as a point of contact between shop floor, production teams and management
- Provide regular updates on progress, issues and resource/material shortages or re-work requirements
- Complete production records including job book inspection sign offs
- Communicate clearly with fitting, welding, paint and quality teams to resolve issues
- Work closely with Quality, Health & Safety and Stores teams to maintain smooth workflow
Health & Safety Compliance:
- Responsible for health and safety within respective area/team
- Ensure all work is conducted in accordance with company health and safety policies, risk assessments and statutory regulations
- Promote a culture of safety first and challenge unsafe behaviours or conditions via near miss procedures
- Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings and support accident/incident investigations where witnessed as well as near misses in line with support from health and safety Advisor
- Maintain a tidy and organised bay, working area in line with health and safety 6S principles
- Ensure all tools, equipment and PPE are used correctly and maintained in good condition
Other Duties:
- Support cross-functional teams as and when required
- Contribute to audits, compliance checks and improvement projects

- Perform any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job or business needs as requested by the line manager

Essential Knowledge & Experience:
- Proven experience in trailer maintenance and repair ( commercial or MOD)
- Strong diagnostic ability across mechanical, pneumatic and electrical systems
- Strong mechanical knowledge of heavy vehicles including HGVs, forklifts and other mechanical equipment
- Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools and specialised equipment for assemble and repair tasks
- Skilled in troubleshooting and maintenance of complex vehicle systems
- Full UK Driving Licence
- HGV licence and up to date CPC hours
- Ability to work independently
- Effective communication and documentation skills
- Working knowledge and understanding of health and safety practices
Desirable Knowledge & Experience:
- Knowledge of MOD-spec trailer requirements
- Welding and basic fabrication skills
- IRTEC certification or similar
- Familiarity with EBS/ABS systems and hydraulic components
- Experience selling bespoke or configured products requiring detailed technical discovery and internal engineering input
Working Hours:
Monday to Friday, 39 hours per week

Salary:
From £45,000- £50, 00 per annum. This equates to £22.19 to £24.65 per hour.

BPSS clearance (right to work, identity, criminal record, employment history) will be required for MOD Projects as applicable.
On site/field based working required with limited flexibility for remote working
