Job Purpose
Reporting to the Head of SHEQ, the Health & Safety Manager will lead health and safety activities across all Northern region operational sites. This role ensures local compliance with UK Health & Safety regulations, will drive proactive safety culture initiatives and provide hands on support to operational teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with Company policies, management systems, the Health and Safety at Work Act and all other applicable legislation.
- Provide operational SHEQ support across allocated sites, working with managers and supervisors to embed safe, compliant and consistent working practices.
- Carry out planned and unplanned site inspections, audits, workplace observations and risk assessments, ensuring findings are communicated and actions are effectively followed through to completion.
- Deliver and coordinate health and safety training, inductions, toolbox talks and operational briefings, promoting understanding and engagement across the business.
- Support the consistent implementation of Company quality, safety and environmental standards across all operational locations, identifying opportunities to improve compliance, efficiency and operational performance.
- Support departmental projects and business improvement initiatives, managing agreed priorities and escalating risks or resource constraints where they may impact delivery.
Technology & Automation
- Use Company systems, including Smartlog, Samsara and other business platforms, to manage inspections, incidents, audits, actions and compliance records.
- Support the continued development and implementation of digital systems, automation and reporting tools to improve operational efficiency and compliance.
- Maintain accurate, timely and auditable digital records to support operational management, assurance activities and external accreditation.
Quality & Efficiency
- Monitor and report on safety performance and KPIs such as near miss reporting, incident rate, corrective and preventative actions and employee training.
- Verify that agreed SHEQ standards are applied consistently across all locations, supporting managers to address gaps and share good practice.
- Contribute to the review and continual improvement of operational procedures, documentation and management systems, ensuring they remain practical, effective and aligned with business needs.
Required Skills & Experience
- NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent (NEBOSH Diploma preferred)
- Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within powered access hire, construction, plant hire or industrial services sectors.
- In depth knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation.
- Proficiency with hire desk systems, CRM software, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work under pressure, multitask, and meet deadlines.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of powered access equipment and industry regulations (e.g., LOLER, PUWER) is desirable.
- Ability to travel across multiple sites
- Full UK driving license
